OUR DIALOGUE WITH GABONREVIEW CONTINUES: NO ALI BONGO CANNOT BE THE EMBODIMENT OF GABON’S FUTURE. NOTRE DIALOGUE AVEC GABONREVIEW SE POURSUIT : NON ALI BONGO NE PEUT PAS INCARNER L’AVENIR DU GABON

English version

An editorial in Gabonreview asks whether Ali Bongo could be the catalyst of hope in Gabon. The answer for us is simple and obvious: no!

The only fundamental program of Ali Bongo, his only ambition for Gabon, is that nothing changes in the country. That he stays in power. This is a reality that the vast majority of Gabonese is aware of, even in the ranks of the pillars of the regime.

In one way or another, Ali Bongo has decided to die in power and if we let him, he will end up a bedbug but still president like Omar Bongo, and will bequeath us in turn to his son. All the signs of this scenario are before us in Gabon.

Here is a type of "stability and continuity" in Françafrique sauce, which we do not want. What is the argument he could use today to give himself a bit of legitimacy after having massacred the Gabonese people? Can he invent a new economic and political model whose slogan would be "I kill you but it is for your own good"? No, Ali Bongo cannot propose any acceptable pact to the Gabonese people; he cannot therefore be the incarnation of a hopeful future.

Ali Bongo is not indispensable to Gabon, we can and must do without him. This is why we must not give up!
