Signing of an agreement between Gabon and the European Union

Jean Eric Nziengui Mangala (Spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior)

The European Union signed on Monday 25 July 2016 with the Gabonese side an agreement to send an Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) to Gabon during the presidential election of 27 August 2016.

The agreement was signed by the Gabonese ministers of foreign affairs, Emmanuel Issozet Ngondet and his colleague of the Interior, Pacôme Moubelet Boubeya for the Gabonese side. Helmuth Kulitz, EU representative in Gabon signed for the European side.

The mission will be led by Mrs Mariya Gabriel, member of the European Parliament who will come from Brussels and is expected imminently in Libreville.

The mission is part of a process of transparent, free and credible elections. Gabon wants the EU to send a large number of observers who would not only stop in the big cities of the country, but who could travel even to the most remote places and soak up the realities of the terrain, there is nothing to hide.

The Ambassador Head of the EU Delegation, for his part, reiterated Brussels's thanks to the Gabonese government for this solicitation and that, as stipulated in the agreement, this EOM will be in line with the laws and regulations on election observation in Gabon and international standards.

So, Mr Bilié By Nze, when you signed this agreement, did you know that the MEPs were not elected Gabonese? What are you complaining about today?
