The Gambia is a former English colony

After Yahya Jammeh was beaten in the presidential election and wanted to keep himself in power by force, Boris Johnson said the following on behalf of his country:

"It is vital that former president Jammeh now stands aside to allow an orderly transition. The democratic wishes of the Gambian people will be respected. The United Kingdom has a long and historic relationship with the Gambia and I look forward to working closely with President Barrow's government to further develop our already strong bilateral and economic links.”

Jean Marc Ayrault is the French Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Gabon is a former French colony.

When Ali Bongo was beaten in the presidential election and wanted to maintain himself in power by force, this is what Jean Marc Ayrault declared on behalf of his country:

"It remains to organize legislative elections in Gabon. I hope that this new phase of consultation will be an opportunity to emerge from the current political crisis. For years, françafrique has symbolized a lack of transparency, this period is over. The relationship between France and its African partners is in clarity, in friendship and solidarity, but with respect for the integrity and independence of each of these countries ".

Dear readers, when we assess the symmetry between the two discourses of the former colonial powers towards the Gambia and Gabon, for similar problems of maintaining a dictatorship in power by force; it becomes understandable why Francophone Africa is less free than its Anglophone counterpart. We have work ahead of us!

Le Royaume-Uni a une relation longue et historique avec la Gambie et je suis impatient de travailler en étroite collaboration avec le gouvernement du Président Barrow pour développer davantage nos liens bilatéraux et économiques déjà étroits. »

Les relations entre la France et ses partenaires africains, c’est dans la clarté, dans l’amitié, dans la solidarité, mais dans le respect de l’intégrité et l’indépendance de chacun de ces pays ».

Chers lecteurs, quand on évalue la symétrie entre les deux discours des anciennes puissances coloniales envers la Gambie et le Gabon, pour des problèmes similaires de maintien d’une dictature au pouvoir par la force ; on comprend pourquoi l’Afrique francophone est moins libre que sa collègue anglophone. Nous avons du travail devant nous !
