THE GABONESE FREE CIVIL SOCIETY IS CALLING FOR A STRONG MOBILIZATION IN SUPPORT OF THE STUDENTS. LA SOCIETE CIVILE GABONAISE LIBRE APPELLE A UNE FORTE MOBILISATION EN SOUTIEN AUX ETUDIANTS

English version

In recent days, the Ali Bongo regime has once again shown its willingness to stop at nothing to suppress legitimate dissent, by violently cracking down on university students who were peacefully meeting to discuss their complaints to the government. In what can only be described as a colossally misjudged act, the security forces attacked the students, wounding and arresting many. In response to the violence against the students and to the criminalization of peaceful protesters, the Gabonese free civil society assembled under the movement "Ça Suffit Comme Ça" has issued the statement we published below.

Press release from the free Gabonese Civil Society following the repression by security forces that occurred April 18, 2012 at the University of Libreville and the arbitrary detention of students

As part of finding solutions to the crisis within the Omar Bongo University (UOB), the students organized a peaceful meeting on Wednesday, April 18 at the university campus, to reassert their claims, considered legitimate by all parties, asking for the departure of the gendarmerie from the ground of the University and seek the personal involvement of the Head of State in order to find a definitive solution to this situation that has lasted too long.

In response to this peaceful demonstration, the government ordered the contingent of gendarmes on duty within the university supported by police units to engage in violence and to brutalize and arrest of students on campus and in different neighborhoods of Libreville. Several students were injured, others were arrested and incarcerated in the jails of the police and gendarmerie, they will be presented to the prosecutor on Monday April 23.

Through this act of unspeakable violence, the "emerging" regime has just reaffirmed before the world its brutal and repressive character, its desire to silence all dissenting voices and its determination not to find solutions to problems that undermine the smooth running of the country.

How else could be interpreted the ease and promptness with which the government and the President of the Republic act when it comes to lavish unnecessary and unproductive spending and their willingness to yield nothing when it comes to address issues of education, health, housing ... of the Gabonese people?

What does the completion of repairs to student campus housing cost, when compared to the fees distributed graciously to Pele, to R. Kelly, to Akon or to Fally Ipoupa, just to come and amuse a few people for a few minutes to satisfy the whims of the Prince? What is the cost of the construction of several classrooms, a maternity at the general hospital that is supplied with running water, a few buildings to accommodate the extra patients who currently have to be infused standing up, when compared to the 65 billion francs spent to acquire a mansion in Paris?

What does student scholarships cost compared to the unwarranted and unproductive amounts allocated for the operation of the National Agency of Great Works whose results are not seen? How much does the communication of the head of state and his many luxury travel, cost? How much did the organizing of the delocalized Council of Ministers and the resulting selected projects that have not even begun being executed cost us?

Facing the authoritarian drift of the "emerging" regime and its desire to silence any dissenting voices while maintaining the country in a situation of non-development for the enrichment of a minority of "arrogant crackpots", the Movement "«Ça Suffit Comme Ça» asks students, pupils, teachers, parents and all democratic Gabonese, to rally and defeat this macabre project of destruction of our educational system, the commoditization of the Gabonese people, of looting of our resources and liquidation of our country.

Right now, while asking the students not to give in to threats and intimidation, the Movement «Ça Suffit Comme Ça» calls on the Gabonese people to massively go to the courthouse of Libreville this Monday, April 23 to lend support to the students and express their rejection of dictatorship.
