WHAT CAN WE EXTRAPOLATE FROM COPIL’S NUMBERS? QUE POUVONS NOUS EXTRAPOLER DES CHIFFRES DU COPIL ?

English version

Dear readers, so far COPIL is telling us that only 632 people have been tested in Gabon and 57 of these have been positive for coronavirus.

In epidemiological statistics, the standard is to assess an epidemic in 100,000 people. It is from this standard that the most reliable figures are obtained. To better assess the COPIL figures, we can therefore extrapolate these to 100,000 people.

We can therefore deduce that if 57 people out of 632 are positive, it means that if COPIL tested 100,000 people in Gabon we would probably have 9018 positive tests. Dear readers, here is the reality of statistical deduction.

We can continue the analysis by saying that if the mortality rate fluctuates between 1 and 4%, we can therefore expect with the current figures, that there will be between 90 and 360 deaths. But if the numbers increase exponentially to the point where there are 100 cases in 800 tests, the number of positives per 100,000 would go from 9,018 to 12,500 and the number of potential deaths would from the range of 90-360 to that of 125-500.

Dear readers, you would have understood that the more the number of positives increases, the more the potential number of deaths will increase also. It is therefore important that you protect yourself from this infection because the health system in Gabon will not be able to contain a significant number of patients. So, don't count on this regime to save you.
