For a few days now, we have noticed a certain buzz from some diplomatic circles, some of them heavyweights in international relations, for a return in Gabon of what is commonly called friendly opposition. These calls indicate two things: first, the utter failure of Ali Bongo’s strategy that aimed to starve opponents, whether they are employees of the state, in the trade unions or even students, by cutting their wages and all access to the benefits associated with their status; and second, the success of the operations of the free civil society that despite a path strewn with pitfalls courtesy of the regime, continues to set the trajectory of the country inexorably toward a national dialogue for which the proponents of the regime have never hidden their rejection. Having found that the more time passes, the more the trajectory of the country is against Ali Bongo, and not wanting Ali Bongo to completely lose control of the direction of the country, a maneuver of an opening toward the opposition has been initiated. This maneuver’s objective aims solely and finally to the pacification of the opposition, that is to say, a return to an opposition in name only.

Everybody knows that in a truly democratic country, an opposition exists to present an alternative and from that perspective, to ask the Gabonese opposition to just play a friendly role alongside Ali Bongo and to pretend to care about the Gabonese people, is a veritable national tragedy. In recent years, we have seen figures of the leading opposition parties voluntarily foil every opportunity to create a serious political alternative in the country. This little game left an entire nation without an alternative, meaning with no hope for change, no other path, or even a different style of governing and this is how Omar Bongo’s son was able to take power in a monarchical fashion after the death of his father, because the opposition was in no position to effectively oppose him due to fact that he controlled all the institutions. This mechanism has led to the political monopoly of the Bongo’s and to the concomitant voluntary impotence of the opposition Gabon and its acceptance of perpetual defeatism.

But some courageous Gabonese have had enough and have not forgotten how the Gabonese people have been taken advantage of by both the regime and their accomplices of the opposition and have decided that enough was enough. These courageous Gabonese citizens have started to rebuild a stronger opposition and citizenry. They have done so by strengthening the free civil society and by launching a series of grass roots campaigns which specifically where explaining to the Gabonese citizenry that it should start to believe in itself and to have confidence in its own sovereignty. This citizen movement has been steadily gaining ground. When Ali Bongo declared that he was not interested in dialoging with the Gabonese people, it is this movement that decided to push forward with the organization of a Sovereign National Conference without Ali Bongo and to do so, they opened the registration for such a conference. At the time of the writing of this post, close to 10000 people have already registered. These developments are very concerning for the regime because they highlight the dirty little secret it does not want to come out; that if allowed to do so, the majority of the Gabonese people would like nothing more than to crush the political oligarchy that suffocates them and that these Gabonese citizens were willing and able to support a stronger and dedicated opposition.

After decades of internal strife, the regime sees that stronger members of the opposition have decided to come together to fight Ali Bongo. To prevent this from happening, Ali Bongo is trying to use his father technique of dividing Gabon’s opposition and leaving it without a visible cohesiveness. But as we saw with the eviction of Louis Gaston Mayila from the core group of the free opposition, that polarization is not going to be successful. Another failure of Ali Bongo is the attempt to manufacture a tailor made opposition. Again it is a flop because no self-respected Gabonese citizen would take these stooges seriously. As a stronger and independent opposition takes shape and as the Sovereign National Conference momentum continue to build, these latest appeals by some for the opposition to work with Ali Bongo have only one goal, to stop the momentum of the strong opposition and help Ali Bongo retake control of the events.

The Gabonese people must reject any appeasement toward Ali Bongo and stay the course of their own freedom for this very simple reason: there is no democratic country anywhere in the world where there is no opposition worthy of the title. Anybody who is asking us the Gabonese people to take an appeasement stance is insulting us and does not want our freedom.

Depuis quelques jours, nous remarquons une certaine effervescence émanant de certains milieux diplomatiques, et pas des moindres, pour un retour au Gabon de ce qui est communément appelé l’opposition conviviale. Ces appels dénotent de deux choses: primo, de l’échec cuisant de la stratégie d’Ali Bongo qui pensait affamer les opposants; qu’ils soient salariés de l’état, syndicalistes ou même étudiants, en leur coupant et les salaires et tout accès aux bénéfices associés à leur statut; secundo, du succès des opérations de la société civile libre qui malgré un parcours semés d’embuches par les bon soins du pouvoir, continue de placer la trajectoire du pays inexorablement vers une concertation nationale dont les tenants du pouvoir n’ont jamais caché leur rejet. Ayant constaté que plus le temps passe, plus la trajectoire du pays est défavorable à Ali Bongo; et ne voulant pas qu’Ali Bongo perde totalement le contrôle de l’aiguillage du pays, une manœuvre d’ouverture vers l’opposition s’est amorcée. Cette manœuvre a pour objectif unique et final, la pacification de l’opposition, c'est-à-dire un retour à la convivialité.

Tout le monde sait que dans un pays réellement démocratique, une opposition existe pour présenter une alternative et de ce point de vue, de demander à l'opposition gabonaise de simplement jouer un rôle de faire-valoir aux côtés d'Ali Bongo et de faire semblant de se soucier du peuple gabonais, est une véritable tragédie nationale. Ces dernières années, nous avons vu des leaders des principaux partis d'opposition volontairement déjouer toutes leurs chances de créer une alternative politique sérieuse dans le pays. A la longue, ce petit jeu a laissé une nation entière sans alternative, ce qui signifie sans aucun espoir de changement, pas d'autre voie ni même un style différent de gouvernement et c'est ainsi que le fils d'Omar Bongo a été en mesure de prendre le pouvoir dans un mode monarchique après la mort de son père, parce que l'opposition n'était pas en mesure de s'opposer à lui de manière efficace en raison du fait qu'il contrôlait toutes les institutions. Ce mécanisme a permis le monopole politique des Bongo et conduit à la concomitante et volontaire impuissance de l'opposition gabonaise et de son acceptation du défaitisme perpétuel.

Mais certains gabonais courageux en ont marre et n'ont pas oublié comment le peuple gabonais a été par le passé mené en bateau par le régime et ses complices de l'opposition; et ont décidé que c'en était assez. Ces courageux citoyens gabonais ont commencé à reconstruire une opposition plus forte et des citoyens plus solides. Ils l'ont fait par le renforcement de la société civile libre et en lançant une série de campagnes de terrain qui précisément expliquaient aux citoyens gabonais qu'ils devraient commencer à croire en eux et d'avoir confiance en leur propre souveraineté. Ce mouvement citoyen n'a cessé de gagner du terrain. Quand Ali Bongo a déclaré qu'il n'était pas intéressé à dialoguer avec le peuple gabonais, c'est ce mouvement qui a décidé d'aller de l'avant avec l'organisation d'une Conférence Nationale Souveraine sans Ali Bongo et pour ce faire, ils ont ouvert les listes d'enregistrement pour une telle conférence. Au moment de la rédaction de ce post, près de 10000 personnes se sont déjà inscrites. Ces développements sont très inquiétants pour le régime, car ils mettent en évidence le petit secret qu'il ne veut pas exposé sur la place publique; qui dit que si on les laissait faire, la majorité des gabonais ne souhaiteraient rien de mieux que d'écraser l'oligarchie politique qui les étouffe; et que ces citoyens gabonais étaient capables et disposés à soutenir une opposition forte et dévouée.

Après des décennies de conflits internes, le régime constate que de solides membres de l'opposition ont décidé de s’unir pour lutter contre Ali Bongo. Pour éviter cela, Ali Bongo tente d'utiliser la technique de la division de l'opposition jadis utilisée par son père pour la laisser sans cohésion visible. Mais, comme nous l'avons vu avec l'éviction de Louis Gaston Mayila du noyau de l'opposition libre, la tentative de polarisation ne va pas réussir. Un autre échec d'Ali Bongo est son ébauche de fabrication d’une opposition sur mesure. Encore une fois c'est un flop parce qu'aucun citoyen gabonais respectable ne prendrait ces figurants au sérieux. Etant donné qu’une opposition forte et indépendante prend forme et que l'élan de la Conférence nationale souveraine continue de s’amplifier, ces derniers appels par certains demandant à l'opposition de travailler avec Ali Bongo, n'ont qu'un seul but: arrêter l'élan de la solide opposition et aider Ali Bongo à reprendre le contrôle des événements.

Le peuple gabonais doit rejeter toute accommodation avec Ali Bongo et garder le cap sur l’obtention de sa propre liberté pour cette raison très simple: il n'y a aucun pays démocratique dans le monde où il n'y a pas d'opposition digne de ce nom. Toute personne demandant au peuple gabonais d’avoir une attitude accommodante, se moque de nous et ne veut pas de notre liberté.
