It's not necessarily about praising someone but acknowledging their influence and impact, whether it's a political leader, an activist, a scientist, a group of people, or a concept that has shaped the discourse and events of that particular year. 

The selection for this blog, as our person of the year in the year 2023 in Gabonese is Brice-Clotaire Oligui-Nguema.

Since Gabon’s independence in 1960, that is 63 years, Gabon has been ruled by a president named Bongo for 56 years without interruption, from 1967 to 2013. The man who stopped that trend is Brice-Clotaire Oligui-Nguema; and for that only, he deserves to be the Gabonese person of the year 2023.

Whether he proves to be a reformer or an autocrat who will take Gabon back to an era of repression, this we will know only over the next few years, he has performed an extraordinary feat of successfully leading a coup d’Etat in a nation that has rarely known such events and desperately needed a change of leadership. 

if Gabon fails under Brice-Clotaire Oligui-Nguema, all bets are off for the 21st century. And if Gabon succeeds as a nation-state in the family of nations, it will owe much of that success to one man, Brice-Clotaire Oligui-Nguema.

For that reason, Brice-Clotaire Oligui-Nguema is this blog’s 2023 Person of the Year.

Si le Gabon échoue sous Brice-Clotaire Oligui-Nguema, l’avenir de ce pays sera compromis pour le XXIe siècle. Et si le Gabon réussit en tant qu’État-nation dans la famille des nations, il devra une grande partie de ce succès à un seul homme, Brice-Clotaire Oligui-Nguema.
