Prospector 5 sinks off Mayumba: what is known!
English version
A drilling rig sank on Saturday evening off the coast of Nyanga province with 115 people on board. The death toll is changing by the hour, an investigation has been opened and production at the Dussafu field has been halted.
The facts
On Saturday, October 24, 2026, at around 8:37 p.m., the Prospector 5 jack-up drilling rig sank on the Dussafu Marine oil permit, off Mayumba in Nyanga province.
The rig is owned and operated by the Norwegian driller Borr Drilling. BW Energy had hired it for a new drilling campaign, and it had not yet started drilling. According to BW Energy, the rig lost stability during jacking operations. This is the stage when the legs are lowered to the seabed to lift the hull above the water.
At this stage, the trade press points to a "punch-through." This is when the ground under one of the legs suddenly gives way, the leg sinks deeper than planned, and the rig tilts and then sinks. This explanation is still preliminary.
A death toll that is still uncertain
The first official count, released by the Ministry of Oil and Gas, reported 110 people safe out of 115, and five missing.
Since then, reports have differed:
- Reuters, citing officials and the company, reported on Sunday one dead and four missing.
- Infos Gabon says three of the five missing workers were found alive. That would bring the number of survivors to 113, with two people still being searched for.
- Messages on social media mention three bodies found, but this rumor has not been officially confirmed.
As of this writing, caution is needed: the only figure known for certain is that 115 people were on board.
The authorities' response
The Gabonese Navy is taking part in the search. A crisis unit brings together the Ministry of Oil, the Navy, Gabon Oil, BW Energy and Borr Drilling.
The Ministry of Oil and Gas has opened an investigation into the causes of the sinking and any liability.
CBON spoke out on social media, which the High Authority for Communication restored on Saturday after an eight-month suspension.
He expressed his emotion and announced that state resources were being mobilized. He demanded the truth about the causes of the accident and asked that families be informed first.
On the business side, Borr Drilling CEO Bruno Morand said he was deeply concerned about the people still unaccounted for.
What are the consequences for production and the environment?
BW Energy has halted production at MaBoMo, its nearby production facility. The company says no damage to MaBoMo and no harmful discharge from it have been reported.
That statement covers only the production facility, however. It is not a full assessment of the environmental impact of the Prospector 5 sinking itself, which has yet to be measured.
Fact sheet
- Type: jack-up rig, Friede & Goldman JU-2000E design
- Entered service: 2014
- Capability: operates in water depths of up to about 120 meters (400 feet)
- Owner and operator: Borr Drilling

A string of tragedies for Gabon's offshore sector
This tragedy brings back painful memories. In March 2024, a fire on Perenco's Becuna platform in the Simba field killed five workers, and a sixth remained missing. Unions in the sector criticized safety conditions at the time.
In March 2023, the sinking of the ferry Esther Miracle between Libreville and Port-Gentil also deeply affected the country. Eight people were convicted in May of this year.
The investigation into the Prospector 5 will have to answer a question many are already asking: were the seabed surveys and positioning procedures followed?
What to watch
- The final death toll and the identities of the victims
- The findings of the ministry's investigation
- When production will restart at MaBoMo
- The environmental assessment around the wreck
- Borr Drilling's quarterly results, due on November 18
Our thoughts are with the families of the missing and with the workers who were rescued.
