THOSE WHO WANT TO UNDERSTAND FRENCH COLONIALISM SHOULD READ TROPIC MOON BY GEORGES SIMENON! CEUX QUI VOUDRAIENT COMPRENDRE LA COLONISATION FRANCAISE DEVRAIENT LIRE COUP DE LUNE DE GEORGES SIMENON!

English version

Georges Joseph Christian Simenon, was a Belgian writer born on 13 February 1903 and who dies on 4 September 1989. A prolific author, he published close to 500 works. He is best known as the creator of the fictional detective Jules Maigret.

However, in 1932, he was commissioned by publishers to visit colonial Gabon and write about what he would observe there. The novel he produced as a result is a scathing anti-colonial diatribe. After the publication of that novel, Tropic Moon, when he re-applied to travel again in the French colonies, he was denied a visa by the French Government.

In this book, Simenon describes the French expatriates' physical and moral squalor in Colonial Gabon. He tells us that rape, murder and infidelity are commonplace, and they callously treat the Gabonese people in a way that is impossible to accept. Simenon's description of Libreville tells us that the French colonialists made the Gabonese people lives horrible.

Simenon describes how the French colonialists are making fortunes while making the lives of the Gabonese people horrendous. These French expatriates make their money in Gabon, then travel to France to burn through the money and then return to Gabon to make some more.

Simenon tells us that to be a French colonialist, one must abandon their humanity and treat the locals with absolute ruthlessness. The Gabonese people are considered by the French to be at best servants, good enough to have sex with; and at worse animals.

Please dear readers, do yourself a favor; read this book to understand how the French treated our forefathers and why we are in the current situation.
