CONGRATULATIONS TO “EZOMBOLO” AND “LA UNE”, ALI BONGO IS DONE! BRAVO Á “EZOMBOLO” ET “LA UNE”, ALI BONGO EST CUIT !

English version

In a bold act of defiance, the two independent newspapers which have been suspended by the Gabonese National Communication Council (CNC), have issued this week, a joint publication which front page you can see above. This blog is very proud of the editors and personnel of these two newspapers because they stand by their principles are not afraid to take the regime on. There is no doubt that Gabon is experiencing a very determining time and this blog believes that the more the Gabonese will display the kind of courage and defiance these editors have displayed, the sooner Ali Bongo would be toppled from power.

1. Ali Bongo can only survive if we show cowardice

Although the Bongo dictatorship has been going on for 45 years, for the second time during that reign, a critical mass of Gabonese is now waking up to the reality that change is indeed possible, that change is attainable and that change is theirs if they have the courage to take it. The first time was in 1993, after Omar Bongo stole the presidential election. In the demonstration that ensued, the French oil company “ELF-Aquitaine” became convinced that Omar Bongo had lost power and waited for a while to see what would happen in the country. The opposition leader of that time, Paul Mba Abessole, refused to step up and claim the presidency. French troops were then sent to restore calm and secure Omar Bongo’s power. That act of betrayal of the people by Paul Mba Abessole is and will forever be his legacy. When he had the chance to become the first democratically elected president of Gabon, Paul Mba Abessole proved to be a coward and ran from the mandate the people had given to him. These days, once again, the Bongo regime is vacillating. It no longer enjoys support from the Elysée palace as François Hollande told Ali Bongo during a face to face meeting in front of others participants. In Africa, the Africa Union is now being run by South Africa and we all know that the Zuma government considers Gabon and the Bongos to be a joke. There are not many countries ready to come to Ali Bongo’s rescue if the population went after him. Many in the Gabonese population recognize the new environment and are either ready to strike or getting ready to strike. A new assertive Gabonese individual is being born; one who doesn’t run from a dictator, one who is not a coward. But the moment has to be seized and the opportunity taken. Ali Bongo should not be given the opportunity to remain in power when all indicators are that he is totally weakened. The iron is now very hot and now is the time for the Gabonese people to strike.

2. To end Ali Bongo’s project of a presidency for life like his father

As many people have observed, it is clear that Ali Bongo has an exaggerated and delusional opinion of himself. He really believes that Gabon belongs to him and to his family. He has believed this since he was younger, as Jacques Foccart writes in his memoirs that Ali Bongo was sent by his father to ask Jacques Chirac to allow Gabon to be declared a monarchy; like in the Central African Republic; we all know what happened to Bokassa. But for the average Gabonese who has been living in a concentration camp for 45 years, with schools that have no books, hospitals that have no drugs, road networks that are nonexistent; all of this happening while the Bongo family was busy spending the people’s resources stockpiling luxurious apartments and homes the world over. Another long term Bongo presidency cannot be allowed to occur. This will not and should not happen. Ali Bongo is clearly out of his depth in that he is fighting the battles of yesterday, thinking that he could contain threats to his regime by suspending or even closing down independent newspapers. But now that these newspapers have published anyway and can be read online, what can Ali Bongo do? Doesn’t he seem ridiculous? Doesn’t he appear to be a paper tiger? If the objective of censorship is to punish and intimidate, can Ali Bongo see that in this day and age it is foolish to try to censure anything? For a long time, the Bongos have counted on the fact that the Gabonese people would never become sophisticated enough to understand the working of internal politics, to gage the international political environment and the geo political shifts of our region. This is rapidly changing to the chagrin of the Bongos and the people of Gabon will have to play a major role in their own future.

The life presidency project for Ali Bongo is a non-starter and it will not happen however much he may wish or try to implement it. The people are now saying enough. They have been hoodwinked long enough and no amount of scheming by the Bongos and their cabal would allow that project to continue.
