According to the French press, the president of the transition underway in Gabon, General Brice-Clotaire Oligui-Nguema, would have given assurances to Paris on the orientations he would give to his governance.

 

Brice-Clotaire Oligui-Nguema reportedly met on August 31, 2023, the day after his coup, with the France ambassador to Gabon, Alexis Lamek, and the head of the Directorate General of External Security (DGSE) at the France embassy.

 

Brice-Clotaire Oligui-Nguema allegedly guaranteed Ali Bongo's physical integrity and promised to give him all the benefits due to his status as former president. He reportedly expressed his willingness to continue the partnership with Paris.

 

Emmanuel Macron, the French president, convened a defense council on Thursday, August 31, which was devoted to Gabon. Paris reportedly felt it had received economic and security guarantees about its interests in the country. However, military cooperation between the French Elements of Gabon (EFG) and the Gabonese army has been suspended.

 

After initially suspending operations, the French company Eramet has since resumed manganese mining in Moanda.

 

But France is reportedly worried about the situation of some people arrested by the putschists. Several of them, such as Sylvia Bongo and Jessye Ella-Ekogha, have dual Gabonese and French citizenship, and have already begun to benefit from French consular protection. Moreover, Sylvia Bongo's lawyers reportedly filed a complaint against the Gabonese State in France, for arbitrary detention of their client.

 

Apparently, Frédéric Bongo, Ali Bongo's brother, is demonstrating a vigorous hostility to the seizure of power by Brice-Clotaire Oligui-Nguema. Frédéric Bongo would have returned precipitously from Guadeloupe and rejoined Paris urgently the day after the putsch. He reportedly told the French authorities that the country would be destabilized and that there would soon be a putsch within the putsch.

Brice-Clotaire Oligui-Nguema se serait entretenu le 31 Aout 2023, au lendemain de son putsch, avec l'ambassadeur de France au Gabon, Alexis Lamek, et le chef de poste de la Direction générale de la sécurité extérieure (DGSE) auprès de l’ambassade de France.

 

Brice-Clotaire Oligui-Nguema aurait garanti l'intégrité physique d'Ali Bongo et aurait promis de lui attribuer tous les avantages dus à son statut d'ancien président. Il aurait exprimé sa volonté de poursuivre le partenariat avec Paris.

Mais la France s’inquièterait de la situation de certaines personnes arrêtées par les putschistes. Plusieurs d'entre elles comme Sylvia Bongo ou Jessye Ella-Ekogha, disposent de la double nationalité, gabonaise et française, et auraient déjà commencé à bénéficier de la protection consulaire française. D’ailleurs, les avocats de Sylvia Bongo, auraient porté plainte contre l’Etat Gabonais en France, pour détention arbitraire de leur cliente.

 

Quant à lui, Frédéric Bongo, le frère d'Ali Bongo, démontre une vigoureuse hostilité à la prise de pouvoir de Brice-Clotaire Oligui-Nguema. Frédéric Bongo serait revenu en catastrophe de Guadeloupe et rejoint Paris en urgence au lendemain du putsch. Il aurait dit aux autorités françaises que le pays serait déstabilisé et qu’il y aurait bientôt un putsch dans le putsch.
