One of the cruelest acts perpetrated by one person, ever recorded, was
committed by an Englishman by the name of James S. Jameson, in the 19th
century in Africa, precisely in what is today the Democratic Republic of Congo.
James S. Jameson was the heir of the whiskey firm Jameson; and he was
traveling in the interior of Africa as part of the expedition led by Henry
Morton Stanley.
At one point James S. Jameson told the interpreter of the expedition
that he would love to see African “cannibalism” in action; and he suggested the
idea of capturing an African and thus satisfy his curiosity by asking other
African to eat the captive.
He managed to get his hands on a ten-year-old African girl and sends the
interpreter, named Asad Farran –to offer her to Africans who would eat her
while he watched. He told the interpreter to tell them: "this is a gift
from the white man, who wants to see her devoured”.
The scene was subsequently described by Farran during James S. Jameson
trial, and it was appalling. He testified the following: “the little girl was
tied to a tree; she was begging for help and mercy. Two slashes of knives split
her belly. She bled to death with her intestines hanging out as the men started
to cut her up.
In the meantime, James S. Jameson was making drawing sketches of the
mournful process, which he would later turn into watercolors and would show
them to his friends with pride. He also wrote about this feat in his diary.

Jameson survived a short time after the events, and he eventually died
of a tropical disease. His widow tried by all means to silence the scandal
without success. The story got out to the horror of a great many people.

Anglais du nom de James S. Jameson, au 19ème siècle en Afrique, précisément

James S. Jameson était
l’héritier de la Société de whisky Jameson; et il voyageait à l’intérieur de

par Farran pendant le procès de James S. Jameson, et c’était épouvantable. Il témoigna
ce qui suit : « La petite fille était attachée à un arbre ; elle implorait de
l’aide et de la miséricorde. Deux coups de couteaux fendirent son ventre. Elle
a saigné à mort avec ses intestins qui traînaient alors que les hommes
commençaient à la découper.
Pendant ce temps, James
S. Jameson dessinait des croquis du triste processus, qu’il transformerait plus
tard en aquarelles et les montrerait fièrement à ses amis. Il a également retranscrit
cet exploit dans son journal. Ces croquis sont présentés ci-dessus.
Jameson a survécu peu de
temps après les événements, et il est finalement mort d’une maladie tropicale.
Sa veuve a essayé par tous les moyens de faire taire le scandale sans succès.
L’histoire a éclaté et suscita l’horreur d’un grand nombre de personnes.
