The decision to award the 2025 AFCON to Morocco at posteriori marks a dark turn for continental football. The transition from a title obtained on the ground to a title awarded in commission offices, two months after the final, is an unprecedented event that shakes the credibility of the AFCON.

Senegal won the match on the pitch(1-0), but the CAF regulations (articles 82 and 84) were radically applied: the temporary withdrawal of players from the field during the stoppage for the VAR was described as abandonment. For many, making an administrative rule prevail over the net result of a 120-minute match creates a dangerous precedent where lawyers become more important than players.

This decision of the Appeals Commission, which contradicts the first verdict of the Disciplinary Commission, gives the image of a hesitant and under-influenced CAF.

As Senegal loses its title, Morocco sees some of its fines related to the behavior of ball boys and the use of lasers, reduced. This reinforces the idea, true or false, that some federations have such political weight that they can reverse sports results through administrative appeals.

Instead of celebrating the excellence of African football, this AFCON 2025 will be remembered for its scenes of chaos and its judicial outcome. The virulent reaction of Senegalese players (such as Moussa Niakhaté or Sadio Mané) and the FSF’s decision to refer the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) guarantee that this case will poison the atmosphere of African football for many more months.

Unfortunately, whatever the outcome, the damage may already be irremediably done for the image of African football.

La décision d’attribuer à posteriori la CAN 2025 au Maroc, marque un tournant sombre pour le football continental. Le passage d'un sacre obtenu sur le terrain à un titre attribué dans des bureaux de commissions, deux mois après la finale, est un événement sans précédent qui ébranle la crédibilité de la CAN.

Le Sénégal a remporté le match sur le terrain (1-0), mais le règlement de la CAF (articles 82 et 84) a été appliqué de manière radicale : le retrait temporaire des joueurs du terrain lors de l'arrêt de jeu pour la VAR a été qualifié d'abandon. Pour beaucoup, faire primer une règle administrative sur le résultat net d'un match de 120 minutes crée un précédent dangereux où les juristes deviennent plus importants que les joueurs.

Cette décision de la Commission d'Appel, qui contredit le premier verdict de la Commission Disciplinaire, donne l'image d'une CAF hésitante et sous influence. 

Alors que le Sénégal perd son titre, le Maroc voit certaines de ses amendes liées au comportement des ramasseurs de balles et à l'usage de lasers réduites. Cela renforce l'idée, vraie ou fausse, que certaines fédérations ont un poids politique tel qu'elles peuvent renverser des résultats sportifs par des recours administratifs.

Au lieu de célébrer l'excellence du football africain, cette CAN 2025 restera dans les mémoires pour ses scènes de chaos et son issue judiciaire. La réaction virulente des joueurs sénégalais (comme Moussa Niakhaté ou Sadio Mané) et la décision de la FSF de saisir le Tribunal Arbitral du Sport (TAS) garantissent que cette affaire va empoisonner l'ambiance du football africain pendant encore de longs mois.

Malheureusement, quel que soit l’issue, le mal est-il déjà peut être irrémédiable pour l'image du football africain.
