Wayne Shorter, who participated in the development of modern jazz, died on Thursday, 2 March 2023 in Los Angeles. He was 89.

 

Wayne Shorter was born in Newark in the New Jersey, on Aug. 25, 1933. His father, Joseph, worked for the Singer sewing machine company, and his mother, Louise, sewed for a furrier.

 

A child prodigy, Wayne Shorter won a citywide music contest at age 12, which led to his attending Newark Arts High School, the first public high school in the USA specializing in the visual and performing arts. There he encountered several teachers who introduced him to music theory and composition; and more importantly to Be-Bop. Wayne Shorter and his brother, a trumpeter, joined a local bebop group led by a singer named Jackie Bland. He attended New York University and earned a degree in music education before joining Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers.

 

His career spanned more than 60 years. He emerged in the 1960s as a tenor saxophonist and composer with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and the Miles Davis Quintet, two of the most celebrated bands in jazz history. Later he formed with Czech keyboardist Josef Zawinul, The Weather Report, the band that revealed to the world the bass phenom Jaco Pastorius.

Wayne Shorter est né à Newark dans le New Jersey, le 25 août 1933. Son père, Joseph, travaillait pour l’entreprise de machines à coudre Singer, et sa mère, Louise, cousait pour un fabriquant de manteaux de fourrure.

 

Jeune prodige, Wayne Shorter remporta un concours de musique dans sa ville à l’âge de 12 ans, ce qui lui a ouvert les portes de la Newark Arts High School, le premier lycée public des États-Unis spécialisé dans les arts visuels et musicaux. Il y rencontra plusieurs professeurs qui l’initièrent à la théorie musicale et à la composition ; et plus important encore, au Be-Bop. Wayne Shorter et son frère, un trompettiste, rejoignirent un groupe local de bebop dirigé par un musicien nommée Jackie Bland. Il alla ensuite à l’Université de New York et y obtenu un diplôme en éducation musicale avant de rejoindre The Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers.

 

Sa carrière s’étend sur plus de 60 ans. Il a émergé dans les années 1960 comme saxophoniste ténor et compositeur avec The Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers et ensuite le Miles Davis Quintet, deux des groupes les plus célèbres de l’histoire du jazz. Plus tard, il a formé avec le claviériste tchèque Josef Zawinul, The Weather Report, le groupe qui a révélé au monde le phénomène de la basse Jaco Pastorius.
