Ali Bongo did not convince the Gabonese people, far from it. His televised speech to both houses of parliament was judged to have been hesitant and hollow. Some even speak of disappointment and non-event, because Ali Bongo said absolutely nothing!

 

In fact, observers agree that Ali Bongo was only brought before parliament in the hope of demonstrating to the Gabonese people that he was more or less able to stand up and read a speech; and consequently he could therefore keep control of the country.

 

But what the Gabonese saw and remembered were the slow gestures, the inaudible voice at times, and the eyes riveted on the sheets of paper, of a president who no longer has all his faculties and should go for permanent treatment. Ali Bongo appears to have been pulled out of the closet to save the face of a regime that has already found his successor, but is simply trying to buy time.

Ali Bongo n’a pas convaincu les Gabonais, loin de là. Son discours télévisé devant les deux chambres du parlement a été jugé, hésitant et creux. Certains parlent même de déception et de non-évènement, car Ali Bongo n’a strictement rien dit !

 

En fait, les observateurs s’accordent sur la conclusion qu’Ali Bongo n’ait été présenté devant le parlement, que pour espérer démontrer aux Gabonais qu’il était à peu près capable de tenir debout et de lire un discours ; et donc par voie de conséquence il pouvait donc garder la main sur le pays.

 

Mais ce que les Gabonais ont vu et retenu, étaient les gestes lents, la voix inaudible par moments, et les yeux rivés sur les feuilles, d’un président qui n’a plus tous ses moyens et devrait aller se faire soigner de manière permanente et définitive. Ali Bongo semble avoir été sorti du placard pour sauver la face d’un régime qui a déjà désigné son successeur, mais cherche simplement à gagner du temps.
