ALI BONGO THE “I IS ANOTHER” CANDIDATE! ALI BONGO : LE CANDIDAT “JE EST UN AUTRE !”

English version

Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891), one of the immortals so called cursed poets (with Paul Verlaine, Tristan Corbiere, Stephane Mallarmé etc.), in a letter to Paul Demeny (another poet) dated 15 May 1871 exclaimed "I is another!" This formula is deliberately paradoxical and ultimately contradictory because it identifies both the subject: "I", which is the identity of the individual pole, and its opposite "another" which is unknown, undefined, and foreign.

The Gabonese people, before Ali Bongo who has just announced his candidacy to succeed himself (originally stolen anyway), are in front of an individual whose "I" has been proven to be a fake, and "another" what we seek to expose and that Ali Bongo is trying to hide so desperately. His "I" is truly "another" according to the words of Rimbaud.

Our political context of the moment meets the meaning of Rimbaud’s formula. If the "I" is false, so when Ali Bongo speaks about himself, at the first, who is he talking about? When Ali Bongo speaks of our collective, can we trust him knowing that he inserted himself in this national union under a false identity?

In political science, identity is used for purposes of both collective and individual constructions. Identity is a concept which it is important to accurately define, or one risk of seeing it serve as a smokescreen for all kinds of amalgams. Identity is neither an object nor a feature, or a state; it remains somewhat elusive and impalpable, which predisposes it to many abuses. It is a volatile force that can only be grasped through the appreciating what it produces. Only its effects are tangible. So we must consider identity as the organizing principle of our social order. Identity is a strength that categorizes us and puts us on the map.

The Gabonese people do not ask Ali Bongo for the moon; no, we are just asking for a name (the real one), a surname (the real one), and a date of birth (the real one). But on these points, Ali Bongo has lied so much that he has passed the point of no return. Identity could be compared to a coagulation process that allows the individual to take shape, to assert themselves and take their place in a society. But by lying about his identity, his "I", Ali Bongo has chosen to cultivate dissimilarity, doubt, inconstancy and suspicion; and is making considerable damage to the building of a coherent and harmonious Gabon. Imagine for a moment that we all have false documents, false identities, we no longer would have a society. If Ali Bongo would like the Gabonese people to present themselves to him authentically, he must be the first to come before us in the same way!

One can only be defined in relation to others. It is always in relation with others that we know who we are. It is through memberships to clusters with others, that the individual is also built. It is by being honest with others that one demonstrates respect for the society in which they live. In lying continuously about his identity, Ali Bongo weakens Gabon, instead of building it. We cannot accept that whenever a president says "I", he is actually making reference to "another."

Who is Ali Bongo? That remains to be discovered! But we already know that it is a delinquent and a liar.
