In 1931 the International Olympic Committee awarded Berlin the organization of the Summer Games of 1936. This choice marked the return of Germany to the international scene after its isolation from the First World War.

Two years later, Hitler became chancellor and turned Germany into a one-party dictatorship implementing a policy of persecution against all undesirables. The will of the Nazis to control all aspects of national life also extended to sport. Hitler wanted to use sport to promote the "Aryan" myth of racial superiority.

Movements for the boycott of the Berlin Olympics broke out in the United States, Great Britain, France, Sweden, Czechoslovakia and the Netherlands. These movements did not succeed, as some naive people thought that sport would bring Germans closer to other peoples.

Nazi Germany exploited the 1936 Olympic Games for propaganda purposes. Hitler presented the image of a new, strong and united Germany, while concealing the racism of the regime, its policy of Aryan purity and the rise of political violence in the country. The regime used the Olympics to provide foreign public opinion and journalists with a false image of a peaceful and tolerant Germany.

After the Games, Hitler launched his expansionist policy by invading Poland on 1 September 1939 and triggering the Second World War, which was to cause more than 20 million deaths.

En 1931, le Comité International Olympique attribua à Berlin l'organisation des Jeux d'été de 1936. Ce choix marquait le retour de l'Allemagne sur la scène internationale après sa période d'isolation suite à la Première Guerre mondiale.

Deux ans plus tard, Hitler devenait chancelier et transforma l’Allemagne en une dictature à parti unique mettant en œuvre une politique de persécution à l'encontre de tous les indésirables. La volonté affichée par les Nazis de contrôler tous les aspects de la vie nationale s'étendit aussi au sport. Hitler voulait se servir du sport pour promouvoir le mythe de la supériorité raciale "aryenne".

Des mouvements pour le boycott des Jeux olympiques de Berlin se mirent en place aux Etats-Unis, en Grande-Bretagne, en France, en Suède, en Tchécoslovaquie et aux Pays-Bas. Ces mouvements n'aboutirent pas, car certains naïfs pensaient que le sport allait rapprocher les Allemands des autres peuples.

L'Allemagne nazie exploita les Jeux olympiques de 1936 à des fins de propagande. Hitler présenta l’image d'une Allemagne nouvelle, forte et unie, tout en dissimulant le racisme du régime, sa politique de pureté aryenne et la montée des violences politiques dans le pays. Le régime utilisa les Jeux olympiques pour fournir aux spectateurs et aux journalistes étrangers une fausse image d'une Allemagne pacifique et tolérante.

Après les Jeux, Hitler lança sa politique expansionniste en envahissant la Pologne le 1er septembre 1939 et en déclenchant la deuxième guerre mondiale, ce conflit qui devait causer plus de 20 millions de morts.
