The presidential election will take place in Gabon in exactly one week from today. It is now clear that this election mainly will oppose Jean Ping to Ali Bongo, although there are still a dozen other candidates. The truth of the matter is that these candidates are all peripheral, mainly in terms of their ability to reach a broad electorate.

It is likely that Jean Ping will embody the hopes of the Gabonese people to see Ali Bongo disappear from the country’s political landscape. Therefore, it is turning toward Jean Ping that we hammer our eternal question: have you given yourself the means to win?

The question deserves to be amplified because it is its response that will separate, in a week, the possibility of victory and failure against Ali Bongo. It is clear that the Gabonese population is motivated by the idea of getting rid of Ali Bongo and they will go to the polls in the hope that the outcome will be that one. It is equally obvious that, as the bearer of this hope, it is incumbent to Jean Ping and his campaign staff, to organize so that the Gabonese population will not have a hangover on the 28th or 29th of August, when René Aboghe-Ella and Marie-Madeleine Mborantsuo will come with their pretense announce results which, if nothing is done here and now, will be pure fantasies.

During his recent appearance on Africa 24, to the question of how he intends to secure the ballot of the population, Jean Ping responded exactly in the same way than André Mba Obame and Pierre Mamboundou in 2009; but none of them was yet declared president.

Jean Ping said he would protect effectively the vote of Gabonese citizens by having in each polling station, anti-fraud squads, educating supposedly incorruptible observers, by being posted in the polling stations during the counting, etc. But unfortunately, all these measures have been in place since 1993, but they have not created the conditions of change in Gabon.

In 1993, the Bongo regime declared itself the winners while the counting of the results revealing them to have been beaten was ongoing. In 2009, it is the security forces that went to disperse the opposition leaders who were organizing a sit-in outside the entrance of the ironically named city of democracy, before proclaiming fanciful results and putting the country under a curfew.

This blog expects that the same scenario will happen in a week, because that is the only way for Ali Bongo to stay in power. He knows he cannot win a free and fair election in Gabon. We are concerned that the guarantees given by Ping seem meager and resemble those already set out in the past by all the opposition candidates.

We do not want to wake up with a nasty hangover on the 28th or 29th of August 2016 and we call on the campaign staff of Jean Ping and those of the former candidates now behind him, to be more serious about their promise to secure the vote of the Gabonese people. For now we do not see much being done on the ground, they have to do better and show us that 2016 will not be like 2009; because this blog doubt that the Gabonese people will be able to withstand a new trauma. So, Mr. Jean Ping: how will you win?

L’élection présidentielle a lieu au Gabon dans exactement une semaine, jour pour jour. Il est clair aujourd’hui que cette élection opposera principalement Jean Ping à Ali Bongo, même s’il y a encore une dizaine d’autres candidats en lice. La vérité reste que ces candidats sont tous périphériques, principalement sur le plan de leur capacité à atteindre un vaste électorat.

C’est donc vraisemblablement Jean Ping qui incarnera l’espoir du peuple Gabonais de voir Ali Bongo disparaitre du paysage politique du pays. Par conséquent, c’est donc en nous tournant vers Jean Ping que nous devons marteler notre sempiternelle question : vous êtes-vous donné les moyens de gagner ?

La question mérite d’être amplifiée car c’est sa réponse qui séparera dans une semaine, la possibilité de victoire et d’échec face à Ali Bongo. Il est clair que la population Gabonaise est motivée par l’idée de se débarrasser d’Ali Bongo et qu’elle se rendra aux urnes en espérant que le dénouement sera celui-là. Il est tout aussi évident qu’étant le porteur de cet espoir, il revient à Jean Ping et à son état-major de campagne, de s’organiser pour que la population Gabonaise n’ait pas la gueule de bois le 28 ou le 29 Aout, quand René Aboghe-Ella et Marie-Madeleine Mborantsuo viendront faire leur cinéma en annonçant des résultats qui, si rien n’est fait ici et maintenant, seront fantaisistes.

Lors de son récent passage sur Africa 24, à la question de savoir comment il entend sécuriser les bulletins de votes des populations, Jean Ping a répondu exactement comme le firent André Mba Obame et Pierre Mamboundou en 2009 ; mais aucun d’eux ne fut pourtant déclaré président.

Jean Ping a déclaré qu’il protègerait efficacement le vote des citoyens Gabonais en ayant dans chaque bureau de vote, des brigades anti-fraude, en formant des scrutateurs supposément incorruptibles, en restant postés dans les bureaux de vote pendant le dépouillement, etc. Mais malheureusement, toutes ces mesures ont été en place depuis 1993, mais n’ont jamais créé les conditions d’alternance au Gabon.

En 1993, le régime Bongo se déclara même vainqueur alors que le dépouillement des résultats le donnant battu était en cours. En 2009, c’est la force publique qui est allée disperser les leaders de l’opposition qui faisaient un sit-in devant l’entrée de l’ironiquement nommée cité de la démocratie, avant de proclamer des résultats fantaisistes et de déclarer le couvre-feu sur toute l’étendue du territoire.

Ce blog s’attend à ce que le même scenario se produise dans une semaine, car c’est le seul moyen pour Ali Bongo de rester au pouvoir. Il sait qu’il ne peut pas gagner une élection libre et équitable au Gabon. Nous sommes inquiets que les garanties de Ping nous semblent bien maigres et ressemblent à celles déjà énoncées par le passé par tous les candidats de l’opposition.

Nous ne voulons pas nous réveiller avec une sale gueule de bois le 28 ou 29 Aout 2016, et demandons à l’état-major de campagne de Jean Ping et ceux des ex candidats désormais derrière lui, d’être plus sérieux dans leur promesse de sécuriser le vote des Gabonais. Pour l’instant nous ne voyons pas grand-chose sur le terrain, ils doivent faire mieux et nous démontrer que 2016 ne sera pas 2009 ; car ce blog doute que le peuple Gabonais soit capable d’encaisser un nouveau traumatisme.
