WHAT IS THE REAL FIGURE OF THE GABONESE POPULATION ? QUEL EST LE CHIFFRE RÉEL DE LA POPULATION GABONAISE ?
English version
Here is the English translation:
The first general population census of Gabon took place in 1960-1961. The operation combined an exhaustive census with a demographic sample survey, carried out with the assistance of INSEE.
The final results, published in 1965, put the Gabonese population at approximately 448,000 inhabitants.
This was the first of eight general censuses conducted to date in Gabon, followed by those of 1970, 1980, 1993, 2003, 2013, and 2023.
Starting from 448,000 inhabitants in 1960 and the 2013 census (1,811,079 inhabitants), we obtain an average annual population growth rate of about 2.7% over 53 years.
Applying this same rate through 2026 (66 years after 1960), we would get:
447,864 × (1.027)^66 ≈ 2.5 to 2.6 million inhabitants
This estimate is consistent with the figures from international organizations (UN, World Bank), which put the Gabonese population at around 2.5–2.6 million inhabitants for 2025-2026.
But Gabon has just, on August 27, 2026, published the official results of its 2026 census; validated by the Constitutional Court, at the end of the validation process for the 2026 General Population and Housing Census, the Constitutional Court set the country’s population at 3,518,621 inhabitants, one million more than the figure relied upon by the UN and the Bretton Woods institutions.
This figure is significantly higher than what a simple extrapolation from 1960 would have suggested (about 1 million more inhabitants).
Normal growth from 1960 suggests around 2.5 million inhabitants in 2026, but the figure measured by CBON’s services is around 3.5 million and would have us believe that the Gabonese population grew faster than the long-term historical trend suggested.
The people who conducted this survey must be the same ones who assessed the population of Haut-Ogooué during the 2016 election.
