Ghana's
former President Jerry John Rawlings has died at the age of 73.
Reports
from Ghana say that the former president died in hospital in the capital, Accra,
after a short illness.
The son of
a Scottish man and a Ghanaian mother, Rawlings entered the Ghana Air Force,
graduating in 1969.
He led two
coups, first in 1979, before twice being elected president in multi-party
polls.
He is
considered to be responsible for the renaissance of Ghana.
A week of
national mourning has been announced in Ghana.

ans.

Fils d'un écossais et d'une mère Ghanéenne, Rawlings a été formé à l'académie
de l’armée de l'air du Ghana, obtenant son diplôme en 1969.
Il a mené deux coups d'État, le premier en 1979, avant d'être élu à deux
reprises président lors d’élections multipartites.
Il est considéré comme responsable de la renaissance du Ghana.
