Dear readers, recently, the Gabonese people have had to realize once and for all that the spokesperson of the presidency, Jessye Ella-Ekogha, is abysmally ignorant. How can someone who has such a sensitive job be so ignorant?

 

The office of the presidency is supposed to have a strong team of attorneys and foreign policy experts. How come that none of these so called experts had explain to Jessye Ella-Ekogha how the US constitution has set up the presidential succession?

 

There is psychological phenomenon called “the Dunning-Kruger effect”. It's a social trait that afflict incompetent people who think they know more than they really do, and tend to be more boastful about it.

 

Even though we all saw that Jessye Ella-Ekogha’ statements during the recent press conference regarding the modification of the constitution, were rife with errors, falsehoods or inaccuracies; the most astonishing thing in all of this was that he expressed these statements with great confidence and certainty in his own aptitudes.

 

By saying that the US uses a succession college in case of incapacitation of the president, it is clear that Jessye Ella-Ekogha did not know what he was talking about and did not even care that he did not know. He just said what he thought should have been the truth. However, at this level of responsibility one must verify everything they think they know to make sure that it is indeed correct. Not to check the veracity of your statements is the height of hubris.

 

In Gabon, this is not new because the reality is that the Bongos have been overestimating their knowledge for decades. It's not surprising that this pattern has infected the presidential staff.

 

Remember when Omar Bongo said that the quote “I think therefore I am” was from Victor Hugo; or when he told students at Leon Mba High school that he had gotten a perfect score in dictation during the baccalaureate; except that on was never a subject at the baccalaureate. Remember when Ali Bongo said that to measure whether or not the Gabonese economy is growing, he asks two or three of his friends who have companies and ask them if they are making money. Dear readers, prideful ignorance is a Bongo staple.

 

Omar Bongo held very deep anti-intellectual attitudes. He famously said: “I can make a dog into a minister, and a minister into a dog”; or: “I am the one who advises my advisers”.

 

The political consequences of this anti-intellectualism that permeates the Bongo’s regime has clearly jeopardized Gabon’s development future. The Bongos have zero social, economic and political skills, but because they have been in power for this long, they have no idea that they have zero social, economic and political skills. They therefore display their incompetence at the top of the state, with extreme confidence.

 

Dear readers, incompetence has very damaging costs. Imagine an incompetent surgeon; the patients will be in danger of dying. Imagine an incompetent pilot; the airplane will be in danger of crashing. So, what are the consequences of an incompetent president? In Gabon, people have become too deferential to incompetence simply because the people in charge are incompetent. Because the Bongos are unwilling to admit they have shortcomings, the entire country has now accepted a culture in which incompetent people are so confident in their own perceived knowledge, that they now reject the very idea of improvement., because for them, there is nothing wrong with their methods. Not surprisingly the poorest performers in Gabon, such as the Bongos, the Mborantsuos and company, are also the least likely to accept criticism or show interest in self-improvement and do what is best for the country, which is to leave power.

Chers lecteurs, récemment, le peuple Gabonais a dû se rendre compte une fois pour toutes que le porte-parole de la présidence, Jessye Ella-Ekogha, était extrêmement ignorant. Comment quelqu'un qui a un travail aussi sensible peut-il être si ignorant ?

 

Le cabinet présidentiel est censé disposer d'une solide équipe de juristes et d'experts en relation internationale. Comment se fait-il qu'aucun de ces soi-disant experts n'ait expliqué à Jessye Ella-Ekogha comment la constitution américaine définie la succession présidentielle?

 

Il existe un phénomène psychologique appelé « l’effet Dunning-Kruger ». C'est un trait social qui afflige les personnes incompétentes qui pensent en savoir plus qu'elles n’en sachent réellement et qui ont tendance à s'en vanter davantage.

 

Même si nous avons tous vu que les déclarations de Jessye Ella-Ekogha lors de la récente conférence de presse concernant la modification de la constitution, étaient pleines d’erreurs, de mensonges ou d’inexactitudes; le plus étonnant dans tout cela, c'est qu'il a exprimé ces déclarations avec une grande confiance et certitude dans ses propres aptitudes.

 

En disant que les États-Unis utilisaient un collège de succession en cas d'incapacité du président, force est de constater que Jessye Ella-Ekogha ne savait pas de quoi il parlait et ne se souciait même pas de ne pas le savoir. Il a juste dit ce qu'il pensait être la vérité. Cependant, à ce niveau de responsabilité, il faut vérifier tout ce qu’on pense savoir pour s'assurer que cela est bien exact. Ne pas vérifier la véracité de ses déclarations est le comble de l'arrogance.

 

Au Gabon, ce n'est pas nouveau car la réalité est que les Bongos surestiment leurs connaissances depuis des décennies. Il n'est pas surprenant que ce modèle ait infecté le personnel de la présidence.

 

Souvenez-vous quand Omar Bongo avait dit que la citation «Je pense donc je suis» était de Victor Hugo; ou quand il avait dit aux élèves du lycée Leon Mba qu'il avait obtenu une note parfaite en dictée au baccalauréat; sauf que la dictée n’a jamais été une matière du baccalauréat. Rappelez-vous quand Ali Bongo a dit que pour mesurer si l'économie gabonaise est en croissance ou non, il appelle deux ou trois de ses amis qui ont des entreprises et leur demande s'ils gagnent de l'argent. Chers lecteurs, l'ignorance orgueilleuse est une constante fondamentale chez les Bongo.

 

Omar Bongo avait des attitudes anti-intellectuelles très profondes. Il avait dit: «Je peux faire d'un chien un ministre et d’un ministre un chien»; ou encore: «C'est moi qui conseille mes conseillers».

 

Les conséquences politiques de cet anti-intellectualisme qui imprègne le régime de Bongo, ont clairement mis en péril l’avenir du développement du Gabon. Les Bongos n'ont aucune compétence sociale, économique et politique, mais comme ils sont au pouvoir depuis si longtemps, ils n'ont plus aucune idée qu'ils soient dépourvus de compétence sociale, économique et politique. Ils affichent donc leur incompétence au sommet de l'Etat, avec une extrême confiance.

 

Chers lecteurs, l'incompétence a des coûts très dommageables. Imaginez un chirurgien incompétent ; les patients risqueraient de mourir. Imaginez un pilote incompétent ; l'avion risquerait de s'écraser. Alors, quelles sont les conséquences d'un président incompétent ? Au Gabon, les gens sont devenus trop tolérants de l'inaptitude simplement parce que les responsables du pays sont incompétents. Parce que les Bongos ne sont pas disposés à admettre qu'ils ont des lacunes, le pays tout entier a maintenant accepté une culture dans laquelle les personnes incompétentes ont tellement confiance en leurs propres perceptions, qu'elles rejettent maintenant l'idée même de s’améliorer ; parce que pour eux, il n'y a rien de mauvais dans leurs méthodes. Sans surprise, les moins performants au Gabon, tels que les Bongos, les Mborantsuos et compagnie, sont également les moins susceptibles d'accepter les critiques ou de s'intéresser à l’auto-amélioration et de faire ce qui serait le mieux pour le pays, c'est-à-dire quitter le pouvoir.
