Croke Park Pitch reconstruction

English version

Having finally realized that the pitch of the stadium of Agondjé was of poor quality, the Gabonese authorities have decided to remove the old pitch and replace it with sod from South-Africa. However, once again the Gabonese regime is overpromising by saying that between now and the beginning of CAN 2012, they could have a firm and decent pitch. We have consulted experts in botany and horticulture and they have told us that 40 days is too short to replace a pitch and obtain a playable surface that would be ready to satisfy the demands of modern football. They gave us the example of Croke Park Stadium in Ireland, the largest stadium in Ireland, seating more than 82000 people. That stadium's pitch was entirely reconstructed in 2009. The video above shows the entire process of that reconstruction. The Gabonese people must realize that Ireland is a developed country that has all the sophisticated equipment and knowhow to perform this work very efficiently. Gabon on the other hand is a clumsy country that lacks even the most rudimentary equipment and has virtually no expertise in the area of building stadiums. Yet, Ali Bongo is saying that he can do in 40 days, what takes 3 months to be done in Ireland. In Ireland the entire work period of removal of the old grass, bringing new soil and laying sod, took 23 days, meaning three weeks. Then, it took another 4 weeks for the sod to take root; making it 7 weeks. Finally an extra 6 weeks for the grass to grow properly and be cut so the competition on that pitch could resume. All the work took 13 weeks or a total of 3 months and a week. Gabon is saying they will do the same in 40 days or just less than 6 weeks. Dear readers, we shall all see!
