SHOULD WE ACCEPT ANYTHING SIMPLY BECAUSE WE ARE IN AFRICA? DOIT-ON TOUT ACCEPTER SIMPLEMENT PARCE QU’ON EST EN AFRIQUE?

English Version

The level of burlesque and grotesque surrounding the recent visit of footballer Lionel Messi in Gabon, has allowed us to see how some Africans, here the one who serves currently as President of Gabon, devalue and belittle themselves before symbols of popularity from outside Africa, in order to be accepted. Indeed, Ali Bongo has demonstrated that he was willing to do anything to show himself in the company of the FC Barcelona playmaker.

This blog wanted to understand how state protocol in serious countries, organizes meetings between high-level officials of these countries and their guests, whether they are politicians or not. Recently, for the final of the tennis tournament of Wimbledon, the British racing champion, Lewis Hamilton, was refused entry into the Royal Box, because his attire did not conform to regulations. Above is the photo of Lewis Hamilton dressed in the manner that earned him to be expelled from Wimbledon. For the British, no privilege or exception; the rule applies to everyone including the biggest stars. In Africa, we certainly would have been told that Hamilton’s clothes were decent and that it was the British who exaggerate their dress code. It is possible, but the big countries have not become great in indiscipline and mess. They have rules and stick to them. That's what governing is all about, that’s what leading is about. The respect of tradition, the respect of the constitution, of laws, of the people, the respect of job functions, the respect of state symbols...

The White House has a dress code, as does the Elysee Palace, Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street etc. The official red carpet of a State has a meaning other than the red carpet of the entertainment world. Can walk on the presidential red carpet only persons whose status is equivalent to that of heads of state, their representatives (a Prime Minister, for example), Kings or Queens, representatives of large supra-national institutions like the UN or the EU and the AU. When we see Messi on the official red carpet of Gabon, accompanied by Ali Bongo, what is he doing on that carpet? How could the state protocol allow this? Is there anything sacred in Gabon?

Upon the death of André Mba Obame, the Ali Bongo regime was offended that his coffin has been entered covered with the national flag of Gabon, something that the law does not prohibit. But this same regime believes that Messi has the right to walk on the presidential red carpet when nothing gives him that right. The country stands on its head!

Why do they want at all costs to impose to the Gabonese people a confinement in obscurantism and mediocrity? Ali Bongo could have received Messi soberly, without indulging in a caricature, in a parody of the African dictator at the level of Bokassa the First of Berengo! What is the vision that Ali Bongo is trying to impose in Gabon, by behaving as he does? Will there be a soul able to give us a rational explanation? We doubt it!

In any country, big or small, important or not; at one time or another, it must found a modus vivendi, ie, a common denominator that allows all components living in that country to understand each other’s, to live together, to gather around a common project. A national project that reconciles everyone. One country, one true country, cannot be built by the fantasy of eternal and expensive enjoyment! Gabon cannot make progress if it is led by a man not well in his head, by a patient whose whims follow paths divergent from the needs and wishes of the people. When one enters the inner sanctum of Ali Bongo’s nonsense, as we have done collectively by observing the events of the coming of Messi to Gabon, can we have the feeling that this man going against the wishes of the population could implement the development of Gabon? We highly doubt it.

Fortunately, little by little, the recurrent nonsensical actions of Ali Bongo are leading the Gabonese people to be more self-aware and so they are more ready today, more open and more receptive to a thought of the necessity to be free, of themselves and by themselves, for they cannot accept everything, even if they are Gabonese, and continually stay silent before the distortion and perversion Ali Bongo is subjecting to the Gabonese nation!
