In contrast to the festive and unanimous tone of the official Gabonese press, French media highlight the strategic, economic, and military backstage of this trip.

Outlets like RFI and major French daily newspapers underscore the turning point that this state visit represents. Having come to power following a coup d'état in August 2023, CBON seems to view this stay in Paris as the culmination of his quest for international legitimacy.

The press notes that Emmanuel Macron's France chose to support the Gabonese transition from the very beginning, contrasting sharply with the total rupture observed with the military juntas of the Sahel (Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger).

Paris is reportedly seeking to preserve a historical ally in a Central Africa where its zones of influence are undergoing reconfiguration.

French economic and mainstream media are closely examining the trade agreements, particularly the restructuring of industrial partnerships.

• Local transformation: Journalists report Libreville’s insistence on breaking away from a rent-seeking economy. Emphasis is placed on the obligation for French companies (notably in manganese extraction and the forestry sector) to align with a framework that prioritizes processing raw materials directly on Gabonese soil.

• The burning issue of debt: The French press recalls Gabon’s complex macroeconomic reality, with its debt now exceeding 70% of GDP. Although official protocol highlights the signing of investment agreements (such as the aviation partnership between Air France and Fly Gabon), editorialists point out that bilateral discussions inevitably touch upon financial guarantees and the restructuring of Gabon’s foreign debt.

The security aspect is another highly commented topic. French analysts specify that the historical model of the French military presence in Gabon is living its final moments. 

The trend reported by correspondents in Paris points to a profound mutation: military cooperation will gradually move away from the permanent base format toward a focus almost exclusively dedicated to training and technical support, in order to respond to the sovereignty aspirations of the Gabonese people.

Finally, a segment of the independent French press maintains a tone of vigilance. While describing the republican splendor extended to CBON (gala dinner, formal reception by French institutions), journalists remind readers of the initial commitments made by the authorities in Libreville regarding good governance, political inclusiveness, etc.

Les médias comme RFI ou les grands quotidiens français soulignent le tournant qu'incarne cette visite d'État. Arrivé au pouvoir à la suite d'un coup d'État en août 2023, CBON semble considérer ce séjour à Paris comme l'aboutissement de sa quête de légitimité internationale.
