Tony Oladipo Allen, Fela’s drummer, died Thursday 30 April 2020 in Paris, at the age of 79.

Tony Allen was described by producer Brian Eno, as perhaps the greatest drummer who has ever lived.

Tony Allen and Fela Ransome met in 1964, as two young kids of the Yoruba bourgeoisie. They both had colonial british people in their ancestry, thus the Allen and Ransome family names.

In his biography, Allen recalls that when he met Fela in 1964, he asked him if he was the best drummer in Nigeria and if he could play both jazz and African rhythms. At that time, Allen was already playing patterns similar to American jazz drummers like Art Blakey and Max Roach and adding to these the pulse of West African highlife and jùjú music.

Tony Allen and Fela Ransome created a new music form they called Afrobeat. Fela who later in life dropped his British last name of Ransome and adopted his African ancestral last name of Anikulapo Kuti, said in his autobiography: “there would have been no Afrobeat without Tony Allen”.

Tony Allen recorded more than 40 albums with Fela and Africa '70.

Tony Allen a été décrit par le producteur Brian Eno, comme étant peut-être le plus grand batteur qui ait jamais vécu dans le monde.

Tony Allen et Fela Ransome se sont rencontrés en 1964 ; c’étaient des jeunes gens de la bourgeoisie Yoruba. Ils avaient tous deux des coloniaux Britanniques dans leur ascendance, d'où les noms de famille Allen et Ransome.

Dans sa biographie, Allen rappelle que lorsqu'il rencontra Fela en 1964, il lui demanda s'il était le meilleur batteur du Nigeria et s'il pouvait jouer à la fois du jazz et des rythmes africains. À cette époque, Allen jouait déjà des motifs similaires à ceux des batteurs de jazz américains comme Art Blakey et Max Roach et y ajoutait les pulsations de la highlife Ouest-Africaine et de la jùjú music.

Tony Allen et Fela Ransome ont créé une nouvelle forme musicale qu'ils ont appelée Afrobeat. Fela qui, plus tard dans la vie, a abandonné son nom de famille britannique Ransome, pour adopter son nom de famille ancestral Africain d'Anikulapo Kuti, a déclaré dans son autobiographie: "qu’il n'y aurait pas eu d'Afrobeat sans Tony Allen".
