English version

If you are wondering how Gabon came to make the choices it made pre and post independence? If you are wondering how France chose which Gabonese elites to co-opt and which to eliminate in order to have a Gabon to the taste of the French metropolis? If you are wondering how the foresters settled in Gabon and became so powerful? If you are wondering who enabled the expansion of Elf-Spaf in Gabon? If you are wondering why Gabon has had the leadership it has had with the results we are witnessing? The answer to all these questions has a name: Roland Bru!

In his book The Rentier State In Africa, published in 1996, Douglas Yates writes that Roland Bru emerged as the leader of the foresters in Gabon in the 1940s. Forestry was at the time the number one industry in Gabon. Yates also writes that in the 1950s Roland Bru was mandated by Jacques Foccart to set up a pro-French Gabonese political elite that would take over after independence.

It is Roland Bru who installed Jean-Claude Brouillet in Gabon. While the Gabonese thought that Jean-Claude Brouillet was a sympathetic young French aviator, the reality is that he was an agent of the French intelligence services and it is he who directed the air operations of delivery of weapons by France and Elf , to Ojuku’s Biafra rebels.

Roland Bru was the go-between par excellence between Paris and Libreville and in return received all the logging concessions he wanted; which enabled him to amass a colossal personal fortune and to enter the upper echelon of French fortunes. It is this immense fortune extracted from Gabon that would enable him to buy castles and vineyards in France. He sets up the Moisans Distillery which specializes in Cognac called “Bru”.

The Bru family, very discreet, is today one of the largest fortunes in France. One of Roland Bru's daughters, Véronique Bru-Legaret, runs the Moisans Distillery, with her son Roland Legaret. Roland Bru's other daughter, Pascale Bru, married Patrice de Maistre, who is none other than the wealth manager of Liliane Bettencourt, the richest woman in France and one of the richest women in the world. But above all, Pascale Bru took her husband to Gabon and introduced him to the Bongos who made him the strong man of the powerful industrial and financial group "La Compagnie du Komo" also called Delta Synergy. He would also exercise the same function with the BGFI bank, and would sit on its board of directors.
