Finally, the circumstances of Omar Bongo’s death are revealed

Dear readers, you would remember the mess that surrounded the death of Omar Bongo in 2009, with declarations and counter-declaration of his death; and a closing of the borders by Ali Bongo, then Minister of National Defense, without informing the Prime Minister at the time Jean-Eyeghe Ndong. Thanks to the book by Pierre Péan, we have a better understanding of these events.

The book says Omar Bongo was officially pronounced clinically dead, aware of the night of June 5 to 6 Robert Bourgi was on the scene in Barcelona that day, but access to the room of the dying man was forbidden and Pascaline Bongo refused to receive him. So he gnawed his brake in the lobby of the Hotel Rey Juan Carlos in which lived Omar Bongo's entourage, including Pascaline Bongo, Paul Toungui, Jean-Pierre Lemboumba-Lepandou Michel Essonghé, etc ... It will be in this hall Robert Bourgi learn the death of Omar Bongo. A wake was held that night at the hotel. The book reveals that there Pascaline Bongo attends briefly, in a sorry state. All those attending the ceremony seem unanimous on one point: stand in the way of power to Ali Bongo all that they would be prepared to use force if the family sat on his way know. But the problem is they also know that Sarkozy had apparently dubbed Ali Bongo as his successor.

On the morning of 7 June 2009, it is Robert Bourgi who gave the news to the world by calling the magazine Le Point to announce the death of Omar Bongo. But that same morning, the Prime Minister of Gabon, Jean-Eyeghe Ndong, who no one told anything, instead argues that President Bongo was not dead. On the evening of the same day, it was the turn of the AFP, probably informed by the same Bourgi, to reconfirm the death of Omar Bongo. It should be noted that in the meantime, Spanish newspapers had reported the presence of Africans in Barcelona, with an easy financial trigger; a group of about 50 people, eating in the most expensive restaurants and shopping in the most exclusive shops of that city; staying in hotel suites costing between 800 and 3200 euros (approximately between 500000 and 2 million CFA francs) the night. They cost at the minimum, 100 million CFA francs per day to the Gabonese treasury.

That same Sunday, 7 June 2009, Christian Bongo who was in Paris learned from Dr. Nzenze, Omar Bongo’s Gabonese Personal Physician, that his father took a turn for the worse. But on his return to Barcelona, he found the body of Omar Bongo lying alone. This situation will last until the next day when all alone in the hospital room of his father, he says he witnessed when he took his last breath on Monday, 8 June 2009 at 14 hours. Here it should be made clear that one can be declared clinically dead but kept alive artificially by devices that replace the natural heartbeat. Then it is quite possible that Barcelona doctors declared the clinical death on 6 June and the machines maintained Omar Bongo under artificial respiration until Monday, 8 June. So it was on that Monday at 14 h 30 that Jean-Eyeghe Ndong was informed of Omar Bongo’s death by family members present in Barcelona. The body of Omar Bongo was stored in a cold room in the Quiron clinic.

As soon as the official announcement of the death of Omar Bongo was made public by Jean-Eyeghe Ndong in Libreville, Ali Bongo without consulting anyone ordered the closure of borders, of bars; the prohibition of gatherings, and the deployment of the army and police on the streets. He spoke on television and called for calm, serenity and contemplation. The next day, i.e. Tuesday, 9 June 2009, Christian Bongo in Barcelona was responsible for preparing the body of the deceased. He was assisted in this task by Serge Ocana, Director General of the National Timber Company of Gabon (SNBG) and Roger Kabori, the steward of the presidential residence. Pascaline Bongo brought embalmers from the USA and funeral clothes were ordered from Francesco Smalto (ironically). But the dead body was swollen and the ordered shirt was too small. It had to be cut in the back so it could fit. The jacket underwent the same treatment. The book says that the coffin was sealed, according to the family, to prevent that pictures of a dead Omar Bongo from becoming the prey of the paparazzi, but also to respect a Teke tradition wanting that the body of a leader not to be exposed to view.

The book says that a report was drafted by some Gabonese, explaining to the French leaders that the choice of Ali Bongo as a successor was bad for Gabon. This report was submitted to the DCRI, the DGSE, to Pierre Charon, a close advisor to Sarkozy, who gave it to Claude Guéant. It is said that Paul Toungui and Jean Ping made contact directly with Claude Guéant, to discourage the Elysée to instal Ali Bongo to power. On the evening of 11 June 2009, during a family meeting in the Presidential Palace in Libreville, Ali Bongo told his brothers and sisters, "Dad, it's over. We must do something else, and I have the means " The means on which Ali Bongo counted were: the military hierarchy, France who supported him and Corsicans who funded him. During the funeral wake in Libreville, a violent altercation took place between Christian and Ali Bongo. The description given in the book is quite explicit about the stormy atmosphere engendered within the family by the imminent takeover by Ali Bongo.

A suivre…
