Tuareg rebels who have been fighting the malian army in the nrth, unilaterally declared independence for their state of Azawad this Friday, adding to the confusion in the country of Mali where the president Amadou Toumani Toure had just been overthrown. Capt Sanogo, Mali's coup leader, has not yet commented on the MNLA independence declaration. However, their claim was rejected by France, the EU and the African Union as “null and of no value whatsoever”.

Les rebelles touaregs, qui combattent l'armée malienne dans le north, ont déclaré unilatéralement l'indépendance de leur état de l'Azawad, ce vendredi, ajoutant à la confusion sévissant au Mali, où le président Amadou Toumani Touré venait d'être renversé. Le Capitaine Sanogo, chef de la junte malienne, n'a pas encore commenté la déclaration d'indépendance du MNLA. Cependant, cette déclaration d'indépendance a été rejetée par la France, l'Union européenne et l'Union africaine, comme étant «nulle et non avenue".
