TO MR. MIKE JOCKTANE. À M. MIKE JOCKTANE

English version

You have the right to your opinion; so do we! You said in that interview on Gabon Television (how nice of them to have invited you!), that you wanted more democracy in Gabon; that is great because we feel the same way and therefore, you will not object with the content of this post which will reject everything you said on Gabon TV, because it is a bunch of hooey to be fed to naïve children.

Mr. Jocktane, your appearance on Gabon TV was a transparent stage-managed political manipulation, destined to project the impression that in Gabon, the Ali Bongo’s regime was open to giving space to the opposition; and also that the same regime was willing to negotiate the future of the country with the same opposition. You know both assertions to be false as proven by the fact that less than 10 days ago, the staff of the newspaper Echos du Nord was rounded up by Ali Bongo’s security forces and some were tortured, just because of what that newspaper wrote.

Mr. Jocktane, ordinary Gabonese are rather embarrassed for you, but not surprised, that you have decided to play the role of the stooge who pretends that somebody who blatantly stole an election two and a half months ago, could now be trusted to hold his end of the bargain. Do you really expect us to believe that Ali Bongo is going to respect any concession he makes to purchase his legitimacy, which you have already given to him anyway?

Mr. Jocktane, everybody knows that those who are still resisting the Ali Bongo regime continue to be hindered through arrests, harassment, intimidation and unequal access to public media. That is not your case since you could be found appearing in TeleAfrica and Gabon TV, and during your appearances it is always to help Ali Bongo and not to provide a viable counter voice to the regime. We have seen this before, you are fooling no one!

Mr. Jocktane, we all know that nowadays, the idea of consent of the governed has become inextricably tied to national and international legitimacy. This to such an extent that even dictators like your friend Ali Bongo find themselves having to establish at least the illusion that their rule is supported by the people. Because of this, Ali Bongo feels the need to hold “elections” in an effort to claim to the rest of the world that he has the same legitimacy as, say, the President of the United States or the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. But the majority of the Gabonese people and the rest of the world have rightly recognized that the results of the last presidential elections were fraudulent, and the only way for Ali Bongo to manufacture a semblance of legitimacy is for him to hold some bullshit dialogue from which bullshit resolutions will be ratified in the name of the people; which Ali Bongo would then brandish as proof that he has a mandate from the Gabonese people. Your job, Mr. Jocktane, is to help Ali Bongo achieve this goal; we all know that!

Mr. Jocktane, would you please tell your friend Ali Bongo that for most Gabonese citizens, the chance for bringing change and democracy to their country through the ballot box is now a distant dream, as long as Ali Bongo is in power. Therefore, to dialogue with him is totally unnecessary and a waste of time.
