TO COLLABORATE OR RESIST? WHAT THE GABONESE OPPOSITION CAN LEARN FROM MANDELA. COLLABORER OU RÉSISTER? CE QUE L’OPPOSITION GABONAISE PEUT APPRENDRE DE MANDELA

English version

To write this post, we have used information from two documentaries we recommend to every person who wants to educate themselves about Nelson Mandela and what it took to win the fight against apartheid. The documentaries are: Mandela, Son of Africa Father of a Nation; and Amandla. The particular power of these documentaries is that they tell the story from the mouth of those who lived it. No one can say that this is the western media trying to say this of that; these documentaries tells the story by interviewing South African freedom fighters and letting them explain the events, their decisions, their successes and their failures; their hopes and ultimately their triumph. This blog thinks that the content of these documentary could instruct the Gabonese people who what the get rid of the Bongo regime, about what it takes to succeed, in term of strength of character and resilience.

At the beginning of the documentary Amandla, South African Prime Minister at the time Dr Henrik Verwoerd explains the nature of Apartheid to a journalist of the BBC, as a policy of good neighborliness rather than separation or discrimination. He argues that Europeans and Africans are biologically and socially different and so should live separate lives for their mutual benefit. Then the same journalist goes to Soweto to interview the legendary South African poet, Umkhonto we Sizwe member and composer Vuyisile Mini, who tells him that blacks do not consider Verwoerd to be a good neighbor, but an oppressor and that they will fight him to death. Following that interview, Vuyisile Mini will compose a song entitled “Ndodemnyama we Verwoerd” (Watch Out, Verwoerd), in which he says: “Watch out Verwoerd, here comes the black man, your days are over”. The song is a major success within the black community and is banned by the apartheid regime and for having composed it, its author, Vuyisile Mini is arrested and executed on 6 November 1964. Others prisoners present during his hanging say that when they took him to be hanged, he was singing “Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika” the ANC anthem that was going to become South Africa’s national anthem forty years later. This is the epitome of courage and the belief in one cause and in one goal.

In an interview, Winnie Mandela described how the police came to her house in the middle of the night, destroyed everything in front of her children, beat her to near death, took her to solitary confinement and tortured her for a week. She said that during her torture, she was pissing blood and her interrogators were telling her to abandon her struggle if she did not want to dies. She answered to them that the day she would stop fighting against them was she day she was going to die. That they could kill her and her husband, but the fight would continue until freedom is obtained. This is the epitome of courage and the belief in one cause and in one goal.

In another interview, we learn that as South Africa gradually became an international pariah, expelled from the U.N., banned from the Olympics, the government in 1973 made an offer to Nelson Mandela to release him on condition that he agrees to confine himself to his native Transkei which will become his Bantustan, these pseudo “independent republics” set up by the apartheid regime to cement the separation of whites and blacks and the exploitation of blacks and their impoverishment. Of course Nelson Mandela and the ANC refused this corrupt offer and continued to fight to total liberation. This is the epitome of courage and the belief in one cause and in one goal.

As we are being told that members of the opposition are negotiating position as mayors and council members, we ask them: what are your objectives, what are your goals? Do you want to be mayor or do you want to rid the country of Ali Bongo? Please be clear with us!
