ANALYSIS OF JEAN ÉYÉGHÉ NDONG LATEST PRESS CONFERENCE. ANALYSE DE LA DERNIÈRE CONFÉRENCE DE PRESSE DE JEAN ÉYÉGHÉ NDONG

We have written several times on this blog that of all politicians operating in Gabon today, Jean Eyeghe Ndong has often seemed to be the one most equipped to lead the country towards political alternative, if he so deeply desire; because the man has poise, stature, credibility and knowledge to conduct such mission in this Gabon that is so on the wrong track!

But the problem we highlight as often as possible, is that we are not convinced that Jean Eyeghe Ndong has given himself the mission to devote his being to the advancement of democracy in Gabon; because in our opinion he has appeared indecisive at crucial times and likely to engage in the kind of peristaltic arrangements which have often sealed the political advancement of Gabon. For us the problem remains: would Jean Eyeghe Ndong become one of those liberators Gabon dream of, or just another accommodative to the Bongos as have finally been all major opposition leaders since Paul Mba Abessole to this day? Only the actions of Jean Eyeghe Ndong will therefore provide the answer.

The recent press conference by Jean Eyeghe Ndong held on Monday, January 13, 2014 in Libreville, was another opportunity for us to measure the political potential of this man who could do a lot if he really dared. Indeed, Jean Eyeghe Ndong spoke on the imbroglio surrounding the election of the Mayor of Libreville. An activity characterized by a very weird political behavior by the PDG in power; but this should come as a surprise to no one because such behavior by the PDG is customary! Hence our first question:

After all that has happened in the electoral framework in Gabon since 1990, after witnessing the PDG methods from the time he still belonged to that party to the time he went to the opposition, may we reasonably believe that a politician with mature ambitions as Jean Eyeghe Ndong would be surprised by the shady methods used by the PDG to achieve its purpose? Is it not foreseeable that the PDG would use the fact of the Prince to impose whomever it wants, Gabon being a non-democracy? The outrage over this point by Jean Eyeghe Ndong, even if justified, appears to us quite surprising.

The second question is that the basic rule of political negotiation requires that one provide themselves and a stick and a carrot, and stays firm in that if the opponent does not bite the carrot, it would not take long for the stick to get into the game. In this context, Jean Eyeghe Ndong has only carrots, because he appeals to the republican and democratic sense of councilors constituting the Electoral College. All this moral grandeur and sense of honor is well and good. But where Jean Eyeghe Ndong only offers moral elevation and principles, the PDG which controls everything in the country, has the means to buy directly or indirectly, the votes of these Councilors and in doing so, "elect" its unlikely candidate. It is in this scenario that Jean Eyeghe Ndong as a seasoned politician, should wield the stick by alerting the PDG that any manipulation of the vote would be met with the disapproval of the street and the blockade of the functioning of the operation of Libreville. Students have just demonstrated what the street is able to do and if Jean Eyeghe Ndong is serious in his positions, he would take a determined stance in view of the cheating history of the PDG. With this visibility of the stick and the carrot, the PDG regime would have no choice because Jean Eyeghe Ndong has already demonstrated his ability to mobilize people and there is no doubt that a call on his part would be followed by his supporters. So one might ask: why Jean Eyeghe Ndong does not use a stick in his attempt to conquer the Mayorship of Libreville?

In the final analysis, if we must admit that the text and tone of Jean Eyeghe Ndong during this press conference were full of Republican heights, the fact that he remained focused primarily on the law left us hungry for more, because that would make sense if Gabon was a pluralistic democracy. But unfortunately in a democracy, we're not there yet; and dictatorships do not care about heights of mind. We therefore wonder that if the PDG imposes Rose Ossoucah Raponda as mayor of Libreville, what would Jean Eyeghe Ndong response be? The events will not soon bring the answer to this question to us!

Nous l’avons écrit à plusieurs reprises sur ce blog, que de tous les politiciens en activité au Gabon aujourd’hui, Jean Eyeghe Ndong nous a souvent paru comme le plus outillé à conduire le pays sur la voie de l’alternative politique, s’il le désirait profondément, car l’homme à la prestance, la stature, la crédibilité et le savoir pour conduire une telle entreprise dans ce Gabon oh combien sur la mauvaise voie!

Mais le problème que nous relevons aussi souvent que possible, est que nous ne soyons pas convaincus que Jean Eyeghe Ndong se soit donné cette mission de faire don de sa personne pour l’avancement de la démocratie au Gabon; car à notre avis, il nous est apparu indécis dans les moments cruciaux et susceptible aux arrangements péristaltiques qui ont souvent plombés l’avancement politique du Gabon. Pour nous le problème reste entier: Jean Eyeghe Ndong sera-t-il un de ces libérateurs dont rêve le Gabon, ou un autre accommodateur aux Bongo comme l’ont finalement été tous les grands leaders d’opposition depuis le Paul Mba Abessole à nos jours? Seules les actions de Jean Eyeghe Ndong sauront donc en donner la réponse.

La récente conférence de presse de Jean Eyeghe Ndong, tenue le lundi 13 janvier 2014 à Libreville, fut encore l’occasion pour nous de mesurer le potentiel politique de ce homme qui peut faire beaucoup s’il osait vraiment. En effet, Jean Eyeghe Ndong s’exprimait sur l’imbroglio entourant l’élection du Maire de Libreville. Une activité caractérisée par une conduite très politiquement bizarre du PDG au pouvoir; mais cela ne devrait plus étonner personne car le PDG est coutumier du fait! D’où notre première interrogation:

Après tout ce qui s’est passé dans le cadre électoral au Gabon depuis 1990, après avoir été témoin des méthodes PDG du temps où il appartenait encore à cette formation politique, jusqu'à maintenant qu’il soit passé dans l’opposition, peut-on raisonnablement penser qu’un politicien aux mures ambitions comme Jean Eyeghe Ndong, s’étonnerait des méthodes louches utilisées par le PDG pour arriver à ses fins? N’est-il pas prévisible que le PDG utiliserait le fait du Prince pour imposer qui il veut là où il veut, le Gabon n’étant pas une démocratie? L’indignation sur ce point de Jean Eyeghe Ndong, même si elle est justifiée, nous apparait assez surprenante.

La seconde interrogation est que la règle élémentaire de la négociation politique exige qu’on se munisse et du bâton et de la carotte et que l’on soit ferme du fait que si l’adversaire ne mordait pas la carotte, le bâton ne tarde pas à entrer dans le jeu. Dans ce contexte, Jean Eyeghe Ndong n’a que des carottes, car il en appelle au sens républicain et démocratique des conseillers municipaux constituant le collège des électeurs. Tout ceci est bien beau, la grandeur morale et le sens de l’honneur. Mais là où Jean Eyeghe Ndong propose l’élévation de la morale et des principes, le PDG qui contrôle tout dans le pays a les moyens de s’acheter d’une manière directe ou indirecte, les voix de ces conseillers et de faire ainsi «élire» son improbable candidate. C’est dans ce cas de figure que Jean Eyeghe Ndong, en fin politicien, devrait brandir le bâton en faisant comprendre au pourvoir PDG que toute manipulation du scrutin rencontrerait la désapprobation de la rue et le blocage du fonctionnement de Libreville. Les élèves viennent de démontrer ce que le rue est capable de faire; si Jean Eyeghe Ndong était sérieux dans ses positions, il prendrait une posture plus tranchée, vue l’historique tripatouillard du PDG. Avec cette visibilité du bâton et de la carotte, le pouvoir n’aurait pas le choix car Jean Eyeghe Ndong a déjà fait montre de sa capacité de mobilisation et il n’y a pas de doute qu’un mot d’ordre de sa part soit suivi par ses partisans. Alors on peut se demander, pourquoi Jean Eyeghe Ndong n’actionne pas de bâton dans sa tentative de conquérir la Mairie de Libreville?

En analyse final, si nous devons admettre que le texte et le ton de Jean Eyeghe Ndong lors de cette conférence de presse, aient été pleins de hauteurs républicaines, le fait qu’il soit essentiellement resté centré sur la loi nous a laissé sur notre faim car cela aurait un sens si le Gabon était une démocratie pluraliste. Mais malheureusement en démocratie, nous n’y sommes pas encore et les dictatures se fichent des hauteurs d’esprit. Nous nous demandons donc si le PDG imposait Rose Ossoucah Raponda, quelle serait la réponse de Jean Eyeghe Ndong? Les évènements ne sauraient tarder à nous apporter réponse à cette question!
