READ FOR YOU: ANNE APPLEBAUM, IRON CURTAIN OR HOW TO TAKE CONTROL OF COUNTRIES (PART 1)! LU POUR VOUS: ANNE APPLEBAUM, RIDEAU DE FER OU COMMENT PRENDRE LE CONTRÔLE DE PAYS (PREMIÈRE PARTIE)!

English Version

A new book by Anne Applebaum, a journalist at The Economist and wife of Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, entitled Iron Curtain, describes how the USSR took over countries after countries of the eats block. The book reads almost as a manual on how to take over a country and turn it totalitarian. This book is interesting for the Gabonese people because the strategy used by the USSR resembles what the Bongos have done in Gabon. Applebaum's book, describes how after World War II, the Soviet Union found potential dissidents everywhere, just like in Gabon where anybody who has a leadership role in society, including priests, politicians, members of the civil society; anybody who did not agree with them was automatically a dissident. Just like in Gabon, there were efforts in controlling the mass media, because authoritarians believe very deeply in the power of propaganda. They like to broadcast programs with happy citizens who agree with everything the regime does or says.

In this book, Applebaum describes how the USSR just like Gabon, used the justice system to intimidate people and show the power of the state. The goal of this intimidation is to create fear through a lot of public anxiety. In this post and the next, we are presenting interviews where Anne Applebaum discusses the functioning of an authoritarian state. Dear readers, you will not have any trouble recognizing Gabon. The more the Gabonese people will understand how an authoritarian regime functions, the more they will be able to resist it.
