The UAE
was the first country to approve the Sinopharm vaccine on 9 December 2020,
following extensive trials in Abu Dhabi involving 31,000 participants.
Sinopharm
is a Chinese state-owned biotech company based in Beijing. This vaccine is
based on an “inactivated” virus. The scientific journal “Cell” explains that to
create its vaccine, Sinopharm’s researchers obtained three variants of the
coronavirus from patients in Chinese hospitals. They picked one of the variants
because it was able to multiply quickly in monkey kidney cells grown in
bioreactor tanks.
The
viruses are harvested and inactivated with a chemical called
“beta-propiolactone”. This compound disables the coronaviruses by bonding to
their genes and inactivating coronaviruses so that they can no longer
replicate. But their proteins, including spike, are still whole which is useful
in prompting response from our body’s immune response via antibodies.
Lab
technicians scoop the killed viruses out and mix them with a tiny amount of an
aluminium-based compound — called an “adjuvant” (adjuvants stimulate the immune
system to boost its response to a vaccine).
The UAE said
that the vaccine was 86% effective, based on results of Phase 3 trials in the
Emirates. They say
that 5,5 millions people have already received the vaccines in the UAE, with no
reports of severe reactions or adverse effects. Chinese media reported on
February 20, 2021 that 43 million doses of Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine had been
administrated worldwide, of which 34 million were in China.

Les Émirats Arabes Unis

virus «inactivé». La revue scientifique «Cell» explique que pour créer son
vaccin, les chercheurs de Sinopharm ont obtenu trois variantes du coronavirus
auprès de patients dans des hôpitaux chinois. Ils ont choisi l'une des
variantes car elle était capable de se multiplier rapidement dans des cellules
rénales de singe cultivées dans des bioréacteurs.

Les Émirats arabes unis
ont déclaré que le vaccin était efficace à 86%, sur la base des résultats des
