URGENT: THE FIRST ROUND OF THE ELECTION FOR NEW PRESIDENT OF THE AFRICAN UNION COMMISSION ENDS IN A STALEMATE. URGENT: LA PREMIÈRE MANCHE DE L'ÉLECTION DU PRÉSIDENT DE LA COMMISSION DE L'UNION AFRICAINE S'ACHÈVE SUR UNE IMPASSE

The news from Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia, indicates that African leaders failed to elect a new chairman of the African Union Commission. It appears that Gabon's Jean Ping, who was running for a second, failed to secure the required two-third majority to win another term. Ping's main challenger Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, withdrew from the election after three rounds of a stalemate situation.

As a result of this stalemate, none of the two candidates emerged as a winner.

The AU Commission's deputy chair, Erastus Mwencha who is from Kenya, will take over from Ping until the next AU summit in about six months in Malawi, when a new vote by African leaders will vote again. Therefore, for all intent and purposes, Jean Ping is out as president for the time being.

Les nouvelles en provenance d'Addis-Abeba, en Ethiopie, indiquent que les dirigeants africains n'ont pas réussi à élire un nouveau président de la Commission de l'Union Africaine. Il semble que le Gabonais, Jean Ping, qui était candidat à un deuxième mandat, n'ait pas obtenu la nécessaire majorité des deux tiers pour remporter ce nouveau mandat. Le principal challenger de Ping, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, s'est retiré de l'élection après trois tours d'une situation de blocage.

En raison de cette impasse, aucun des deux candidats n'apparaît comme gagnant.

Le Vice-président de la Commission de l'UA, Erastus Mwencha, qui est originaire du Kenya, va prendre le relais de Ping jusqu'à ce qu'au prochain sommet de l'UA, dans environ six mois au Malawi,  lors d'un nouveau scrutin, les dirigeants africains vont à nouveau voter. Par conséquent, à toutes fins utiles, M. Jean Ping n'est plus président, pour le moment.
