English Version

On 18 August 1977, Steve Bantu Biko, founder of the Black Consciousness Movement in South Africa, the inspirer of the youth uprising in Soweto in 1976, calling for black people to be free, was arrested at a police roadblock and then taken to Port Elizabeth where he was tortured. It was then transferred to Pretoria in the Transvaal on 11 September 1977. The following day, on 12 September 1977, he died in custody. The official coroner's report committed by the apartheid regime, who is said to have examined the body, concluded that he died of a hunger strike. At his death, Steve Bantu Biko was exactly 30 years.

On 20 December 2014, Bruno Mboulou Beka, a Gabonese citizen in possession of all the civil status documents proving that fact, accompanied by members of his family and other Gabonese, was attacked by the repressive forces of Ali Bongo’s regime, with tear gas and real bullets. In front of the eyes of some members of his family and many other Gabonese, Bruno Mboulou Beka fell under the bullets of the forces of repression. It is all these patriots who prevented the repressive forces from taking away the body of Bruno Mboulou Beka, as they did those of other shooting victims. The body was placed in a taxi to go to the hospital in the hope of saving the victim’s life. But the taxi was stopped by the Gendarmerie and the body requisitioned. A few hours later, the Prosecutor of the Republic, Sidonie Flore Ouwé in the company of her favorite pathologist, Liliane Flore Pemba, appeared on State television and gratified us with surrealist statements; such as that the body carried in the taxi was stolen from a morgue in Libreville by the occupants of the cab; the pathologist in turn, affirming to have examined the body, said that the death was caused by "injury to the anterior neck, contusions (the coroner pronounced that word which proves that she did not know what she was talking about) of about 1 cm axis long, there were two on the front of the neck, there was another one just below the chin; and these wounds, which were on the anterior face of the neck, at least one of the wounds hurt the ... a vessel that brings, a big important vessel of the body that carries blood from the heart to the brain, it is the carotid artery; and the subject died from that injury." At the time of his death, Bruno Mboulou Beka was exactly 30 years old.

In 1977, apartheid was all powerful, but it was not to be eternal. Apartheid was crumbling over time, the real autopsy report by Dr. Jonathan Gluckman, was made public. This report restored the truth. The findings of Dr. Gluckman were that Steve Biko had not succumbed to any hunger strike, but to a brain haemorrhage caused by the beating and torture. He had a fractured skull. The pathologist who concluded to death following a hunger strike had been disowned and the truth had triumphed. This is what will be remembered forever by history.

In 2014, the death of Bruno Mboulou Beka occurred in front of several witnesses, including members of his family. His family, in a press release, said it had found a hole in his face; the gendarmerie covered that hole with a Kleenex. Videos filmed by witnesses to the crime, indisputably show the victim bleeding profusely from his face and not the neck as the coroner of the regime, Liliane Flore Pemba, would have us believe. The cause of death advanced by the coroner was chosen to fit with the absurd story, concocted by the regime and supported by fake video editing, to persuade public opinion that Bruno Mboulou Beka was killed in a brawl with other citizens. But to no avail; this latest falsehood convinces no one, because all the evidence indicates that it is the force of repression that killed our compatriot. But a forensic pathologist, Liliane Flore Pemba, participated in the make believe of the regime wanting to invent another cause for the death of this Gabonese martyr. As with Steve Biko, the truth about the death of Bruno Mboulou Beka will triumph and sweep Liliane Flore Pemba in its path.

In the South Africa of apartheid, as in the Bongos dictatorial Gabon, police brutality and concealment of crimes is the rule; and it needs the complacency of forensic pathologists to justify these crimes. But when the torturers regimes collapse, the time for accountability comes!
