Daniel-Franck Idiata is an advisor to Brice-Clotaire Oligui-Nguema. He is also a university professor in the field of linguistics and the founding president of the EM Gabon-Université group, a private higher education institution.

 

This Tuesday, an audio recording circulated in which Mr. Daniel-Franck Idiata can be heard violently insulting a gendarmerie general, who is also a family member. The comments were shocking. Even though the conversation should have remained private, its nature—concerning the upcoming legislative elections—and the social and administrative position of the protagonists as public figures ended up inviting everyone to form an opinion.

 

On the following Wednesday, a video also appeared on social media, showing Daniel-Franck Idiata apologizing to the general he had insulted the day before. While this is a commendable act, this blog would like to take the reflection a step further: why did an intellectual holding important positions at the highest level of the state end up in such a situation?

 

This blog believes that a public figure like Daniel-Franck Idiata, who often appears in the media to offer advice on social conduct to the general public, should himself lead by example.

 

An intellectual who is also an advisor to the Head of State has a unique social responsibility. Given his potential influence on the public, he would be expected to act with integrity and, above all, with restraint. The idea is that his credibility rests not only on the quality of his ideas but also on his ethical behavior, in line with the principles he promotes.

 

Daniel-Franck Idiata's scandalous behavior in the recording is in stark contrast to his teachings and his role. If an intellectual like him loses the public's respect, his ideas, even if valid, risk being rejected.

 

Historical figures like Jean-Paul Sartre, who engaged in passionate political debates, or Michel Foucault, whose work was radical and often controversial, are often cited as examples of intellectuals who did not hesitate to express themselves in an unconventional, even provocative manner, but never in a vulgar or insulting way.

 

Ultimately, when one aims to be a moral guide for society, one must be careful about what is said and how one behaves. This blog believes that Daniel-Franck Idiata has severely tarnished his public image and that his apologies to the general are only the beginning of his rehabilitation.

Ce mardi, un enregistrement audio a circulé, dans lequel on peut entendre M. Daniel-Franck Idiata invectiver violemment un général de gendarmerie, également membre de sa famille. Les propos étaient choquants. Même si la conversation aurait dû rester privée, sa nature, portant sur les prochaines élections législatives, et la position sociale et administrative des protagonistes en tant qu'hommes publics, nous ont incités à nous en faire une opinion.

 

Ce mercredi, une vidéo est apparue sur les réseaux sociaux, montrant Daniel-Franck Idiata s'excusant auprès du général qu'il avait insulté la veille. Bien que ce geste soit louable, ce blog aimerait pousser la réflexion plus loin : pourquoi un intellectuel occupant d'importantes fonctions au plus haut sommet de l'État en est-il arrivé là ?

 

Ce blog estime qu'un responsable comme Daniel-Franck Idiata, qui intervient souvent dans les médias pour donner des conseils de conduite en société au grand public, devrait lui-même montrer l'exemple.

 

Un intellectuel qui est à la fois conseiller du Chef de l'État a une responsabilité sociale particulière. Étant donné son influence potentielle sur le public, on s'attendrait à ce qu'il agisse avec intégrité et surtout avec retenue. L'idée est que sa crédibilité repose non seulement sur la qualité de ses idées, mais aussi sur son comportement éthique, en accord avec les principes qu'il promeut.

Ce blog pense que Daniel-Franck Idiata a gravement terni l'image que le public se faisait de lui et que ses excuses présentées au général ne sont que le début de sa réhabilitation.
