English Version

For some time now, the US Ambassador to Gabon Eric Benjaminson, has been treading a fine line between his role as Ambassador on behalf of the US government, which is diminishing in the eyes of the Gabonese public, and that of an opportunistic lying lobbyist for Ali Bongo, which is increasing in the eyes of the same observing Gabonese public. With the last episode during which the distinguished gentlemen has vetoed the visit by Paulette Oyane Ondo to the US State Department, it has become impossible for any fair minded observer to not come to the conclusion that this is an Ambassador/lobbyist who is working to protect his client.

Eric Benjaminson mercantile activities in Gabon first raised eyebrows when he engineered a donation by Ali Bongo of $20 million to the University of Oregon under the ludicrous notion of the creation of an environmental center, the kind of bullshit anybody who knows how influence is being peddled, bought and sold, would immediately notice as fishy and smelly. It just happened that Eric Benjaminson is a graduate of the University of Oregon and during 2012, that university had a massive fundraiser campaign for its endowment. Oh by the way, Gabon's money did not go to a special fund for this bullshit environmental center; it went to the general fund of the University of Oregon. Then a few months ago, in an interview published by the Gabonese internet publication, Gabonreview, the same Ambassador directly asked the Gabonese opposition to play lap dog to Ali Bongo. He strongly advocated for the opposition party Union Nationale, to accept to disappear and change its name and recognize Ali Bongo as the legitimate president of Gabon and come back into the Gabonese body politics as a friendlier entity to Ali Bongo. You see dear readers, $20 million goes a long way…

This week, thanks to the excellent newspaper "Echos du Nord", we learned that once again, Eric Benjaminson has not covered himself in glory when he used the power and influence of his office to prevent Paulette Oyane Ondo from traveling to the State Department in Washington to be recognized for her work on behalf of the disenfranchised in Gabon. The reason found by Eric Benjaminson to explain his veto says it all about the man; he said that the visit had been politicized in two Gabonese news papers. Never mind that Paulette Oyane Ondo did not ask to be offered a prize by the State Department. It was indeed the US Ambassy in Libreville which informed our compatriot that she had been selected to travel to the USA to meet with government officials at the State Department and travel to several states to participate at various conferences about democracy and human rights. It was the US Ambassy which invited Paulette Oyane Ondo for a briefing session about the objectives of this visit. Some questions come to mind:

1. Did the American Embassy and Eric Benjaminson not know who Paulette Oyane Ondo was when they selected her for this recognition by the state department?

2. Did the American Embassy and Eric Benjaminson not measure that Paulette Oyane Ondo was an influencial public figure in Gabon?

3. Did the American Embassy and Eric Benjaminson not realize that Paulette Oyane Ondo was going to talk about democracy and human right when she travel to the USA?

4. What is the content of the articles published by Gabonreview and Le Temps that can be considered to have caused the Ambassador to cancel the trip?

Dear readers, of course Eric Benjaminson has no answers to these questions, because he knows that there is only one reason why he had to cancel the trip: the realization that Paulette Oyane Ondo was going to meet with influential people in Washington and the USA and she would be telling them in a first person account about the state of democracy in Gabon. The outcome of this could only be disastrous to his client, Ali Bongo; and it is to avoid the dissonance of Paulette Oyane Ondo talking about the reality of Gabon with the picture painted by the US Ambassador to his superiors, which is probably the reason why Eric Benjaminson decided that he could not take the risk to let her speak to people in the USA. Dear readers, this is once again a clear act of lobbyism on the part of Eric Benjaminson on behalf of Ali Bongo.

In the United States, the Internal Revenue Service, a branch of the US Treasury, regulate the activity of lobbying and defines it as "asking politicians to take a specific position on a specific issue". Given this definition, Eric Benjaminson is therefore 'lobbying' on behalf of Ali Bongo when he asks the opposition to take steps to make it easy for Ali Bongo to govern; or when he prevents an activist such as Paulette Oyane Ondo to meet with State Department officials, to protect Ali Bongo's image in the USA. But Eric Benjaminson should stop any pretense of neutrality; he is not fooling anyone. We all know which team he is on; just follow the money!
