THE RECORDING OF JEAN CHRISTOPHE OWONO NGUEMA IS A PIECE OF AUDIO EDITING. L'ENREGISTREMENT DE JEAN CHRISTOPHE OWONO NGUEMA EST UN MONTAGE AUDIO

English version

For some days now, the media controlled by Ali Bongo, principally Gabon Television and Tele-Africa have been airing an audio document purported to be a conversation between Jean Christophe Owono Nguema, who is considered as an enemy by the regime; and another individual. This conversation is alleged to be about setting fires in Libreville. Knowing that the Ali Bongo regime lies quite routinely, this blog recorded that audio document from Gabon Television, during a newscast anchored by Mathieu Koumba, and sent the recording to a friend of this blog who had contacts in the department of Mechanical Engineering, section Vibrations, Acoustics and Fluid-Structure Interaction, of McGill University in Montreal Canada.

After a few days, we received the answer that the recording was a chopped up piece of editing, and not a continuous fluid conversation. The technical expert sent us a series of very complicated analytical charts that would have been very difficult for non experts to understand. We asked the expert to write for us a small report explaining his analysis of the document, findings and conclusion, in as simple a language as possible. Below is the document he sent to us on Tuesday.

Hi Charles,

I did exactly what you asked me, to try to simplify the explanation and not be too technical so the audience of your blog could understand. But I must tell you that it is difficult to explain this stuff without getting too technical. This is as watered down as I can make my explanation.

I put your recording through software that analyzed the following parameters:

1. Voiceprint analysis and voice elimination
2. Acoustical compliance
3. Audio Enhancement

As I told you on the phone, we could not perform the voice audio authentication, because in order to do so, we would have needed the individual voice as positive control. Since we did not have this individual voice as a control, we could not determine if the person speaking in the recording is actually that individual. However what we could do with the range of technical tools mentioned above was to determine whether or not this was an authentic recording in the sense that it was a single conversation recorded at one point in time between two people in a continuous manner.

1

The first curious aspect of the recoding is that from the beginning, the conversation is buried in a noisy background that is very recurrent, as if the background is played over and over behind the voices. If as you told me over the phone, this is supposed to be a telephone conversation, both voices should be dominant in their frequencies because both mouths are closest to the microphone and the background noise should be at a distance. What we have here is a background noise that distorts the voice frequencies, making it appear as if it was added on purpose to camouflage the voices. See on picture 1 how even when we used noise reduction settings, the background noise is still there. This is telling us that that background is superimposed on the conversation and not occurring at the same time as the conversation.

2

The most important anomaly we have found is the progression of the sound wave of the recording. In the middle of the recording, the background sound and the tone of the recording change dramatically. In that part, it appears that one of the two individual takes a phone call, may be on a different line. The problem is that the background noise should not have completely disappeared because that noise was associated with both voice sounds and not just with one. In that part, the background noise disappears and the conversation becomes clear. The other anomaly is that the person that he is talking to, is not heard. If the phone is bugged, they should have recorded everything that when through that phone both ways. This shows manipulation of the recording. Picture 2 explains it very clearly. On the left side of the picture you can see what a normal sound wave should look like. This is the end of the part of the conversation that is clear and has little background. Then on the right side of the picture, where the red arrow is, represents the sound wave when the person reconnects with his previous interlocutor and you can remark that the amplitude and the frequency of the sound waves are different. Actually, the frequency is now lower and the noisy background is back again, but more importantly the sound wave is cut as I have marked with a red arrow. This cut of the sound wave shows that these fragments of conversations were spliced together and were not flowing normally. The physics of sound do not allow for natural cut in the middle of the wave. The only way this could have occurred is by artificially cutting and splicing different pieces of conversations, trying to make them appear to be from a single exchange. This is pretty blatant anomaly that suggests to me that this is a mix and match of various pieces. You can tell the recording has been interrupted here because the sound of the background is back, the frequency is lower and the speech pattern has changed. The continuity of the conversation is dramatically different.

I think this recording has been tempered with, because there are too many anomalies and there is no way the frequency of the voice’s sound should change during a normal conversation.

Call me if you have any question.

Dear readers, when a dictatorial regime lies about its citizens, we must confront it with the solid truth, at every corner. Deception should be allowed to flourish.

Appelle-moi si tu as des questions.
